Description
You might remember that prehistoric whale series I was doing late Septembre/early Octobre. Decided to continue it since I wasn't done yet and it's not that there are a lot of whales still left that I was planning to do.
This is Waharoa ruwhenua, a 5 to 6 meters long transitional species between toothed and baleen whales that's part of the group we call Eomysticetidae.
They have long, delicate snouts with blowholes located way more to the front than in nowaday's baleen whales. Their most special feature however is that they have baleens, but also teeth in the front of the mouth. These didn't have any use anymore, but they were still there and prove baleen whales evolved from fully toothed ancestors.
"Waharoa" is Maori for "long mouth", "ruwhenua" means literally "shaking land" and refers to the place its fossils where found.
