Carved skull of a meerkat (the South African equivalent of a prairie dog, and a relative of the mongoose), about two inches long. Main view of the top, and two auxiliary views from other angles to show the shape of the skull. I currently have it strung on a cord with some bone beads: [link]

Are the nasal turbinates present? I want to see them if they are.
DonSimpson's avatar
No, the tiny nasal turbinates are gone. If they had been there I would have gotten a 1200 dpi scan and put it in my scraps for you to look at. Alas, no.

Can you post a pic of the nasal cavity anyway?

OK. It should bee visible here: [link]

i love your carvings and i was on ebay when i saw this:[link] definitely check it out. it is awesome

Yes, that is awesome. Last year at a festival near me there was a booth with a water buffalo skull that had been entirely carved into an open lacework of large winged humanoid figures and flowers. It was equally awesome. Seeing these guys' work keeps me really, really humble. Not that occasional looks around deviantART don't do that already....

Wow that sounds like one intense water buffalo! What kind of festival was it? I hope that there is a festival like it somewhere near me...I need more skulls.

It was The Crucible's annual Fire Arts Festival in Oakland, California [link] -- devoted mainly to giant, moving, flaming and lightning-bolt-sprouting sculptures.

That skull was the only skull there, and it was in a booth in their vendor area that sold mostly small, incredibly beautiful jewelry in carved bone and silver.

I get skulls from several places: The Bone Room (a store in my area [link] , but they sell on-line also), taxidermists I have found on deviantART (such as Zhon and Morrokko), eBay, people (including myself) who find them in the wild, and people who get them from unknown places and have me carve them.

SWEET BAJEEBAS THAT IS AN AWESOME FESTIVAL!!! things like that do not come anywhere near St. Louis. Being in the middle of the U.S. means nothing ever happens here XD.

That skull was one lucky find, but i am sure that if you could find those vendors, they might have another one or two. I am a big fan of ebay, but most the the reasonably priced skulls are found. I bought a deer skull from ebay about a month ago, but i am afraid to take it to a taxidermist. He might be too old and could break apart during the process. I might get him looked at just to see how much it would be.

I will definitly have to check out The Bone Room, Zhon, and Morrokko. A site i like (but, sadly, has almost nothing but replicas) is Skulls Unlimited. Since I only draw them, i do not mind if they are fake.

A source of excellent replica skulls is Bone Clones [link] - I've carved five Bone Clones skulls (and a couple of their replica sabertooth fangs) on commission, and they have been good.

How in the world do you find these sites? I have decided that you have an insane bone-hunting super power!...that is the only explaination...
DonSimpson's avatar
People keep telling me I have that, but it seems to me like just applying logic. And there's plenty of stuff I haven't been able to find....

Where did you find the skull?
DonSimpson's avatar
I bought it at The Bone Room, a store near me.

I wish we had a store like that here. You're so lucky.
