Navy Battle Lantern

According to my research, this may be a World War II (or shortly after) U.S. Navy Battle Lantern. It's missing the hardware that secures the lid to the base. It also has no batteries, which may have been tall round #6 batteries, 1.5 volt with screw terminals. The only markings are stamped on the handle (5293-L-5) and inside the lid (5293-L-2). There is a post on the back where it would attach to the ship. There is also a 5/8 inch round socket on the bottom with two posts inside which I assume is for a remote power source.

This one is grey, but I may be able to get my hands on another one similar, but is red.
