Did anyone out there go to the San Diego Comic-con this year? If so, can you look to see if any of my artwork appeared in the Souvenir book? I did an Avengers piece, an X-men piece and a Bongo Comics (Simpsons) piece. Should be by D. Cabalo. Thanks!

I just learned I can change my DA name on here, www.deviantart.com/settings/id… so I took advantage of it.  Most of you won't care or notice, most likely since the actual name didn't change just the capitalization.  :/ I know, not interesting enough to warrant a journal entry, but I figure it's been long enough and I've grown as an artist and graduated from a lower case 'd' to an uppercase 'D'...That, and when I signed up 6 years ago, I wished I'd known it was case-sensitive.

Yay!

A new Rip off

Journal Entry: Thu Mar 11, 2010, 11:33 PM
:iconmorecowbellplz: I need more cowbell...
-------------

I was just alerted to a new rip off of my famous "Revolution" piece:

www.behance.net/Gallery/Berest…

I was staring at it because it was looking off somehow.  The face is strange, and just the placement of the elements were wrong.  Then when I compared the two, I figured out that this so-called 'artist' went ahead and traced ALL the elements and tried to rearrange them (just ever so slightly)  so that I guess he thought it would mean it was his own.

I don't understand the psychology of people who'll blatantly do this kind of thing.  If you're going to go to the trouble of tracing my artwork then do SOMETHING different and not make it so blatant.  Not that I'm saying I'm okay with that either, but jeez, the STUPIDITY of people.  At least make it unrecognizable, not just moving the planes a hair to the left and the woman a skosh to the right and calling it a day.

Check out his gallery and I'll be surprised if any of it's his.  It's definitely not the first time this piece has been ripped off, and I'm sure it's definitely not the last.

Anyway, I'll be talking to a copyright attorney about it and see if there's anything that can be done.  If anyone else wants to chime in their 2¢ let me and everyone else reading know.

Thanks!

edit: the culprit has since removed the offending artwork, but the damage has already been done. Thanks to my supportive fans for keeping a vigilant eye and informing me!

Today we celebrate the ingenuity of the American spirit!
I'm talking about the Turducken! Who else but us would think of stuffing a bird into another bird.  Should we stop there? Hell no! Let's stuff that bad boy into a THIRD bird!

For those who don't know what it is:

I may sound sarcastic but I actually want to try one.

Man, can you think if we were to carry that one step further?  Maybe a bunch of chickens into a pig, and then into a cow.  Roast that bad boy in an underground pit, and you got yourself an Ultimate Luau!

A CHICKIGOW! or a COWIGKEN!  I may have started something here...

I made myself hungry now. Have a great Thanksgiving guys!

Movies

-------------

Just caught "Zombieland" last night, and that movie was HILARIOUS!  Did anyone see it? Good stuff! The main actors did such a good job and the story was decent (for a zombie flick) as well. If you can get through the first 5 minutes of gore, you're golden.  The 'Rules of Survival' were funny and the way they reiterated them throughout the movie was quite amusing as well.

Tonight I saw "Paranormal Activity" before it went wide.  Figure I'd beat the rush and the crowds before the viral marketing kicked in and everyone went to see what the hype was about.  Decent flick.  Low budget horror done a la "Blair Witch" but without the nausea.  It's what I call a slow boil movie.  No grand sweeping landscapes or much dialogue. In fact, not much happening visually but I that didn't keep me from looking at the girl's boobs in her tight shirts.  But as far as the paranormal-ness, It's the type of movie where it's what you DON'T see that freaks you out more than what you actually do see.  I won't say much more but it's a good way to kill some time and freak you out in your own home.

Getting My 'Trek' on

Journal Entry: Sat May 9, 2009, 2:23 AM
:iconmorecowbellplz: I need more cowbell...
-------------

I just caught the new "Star Trek."  Anyone catch it yet?
One word: Awesome. (IMHO, of course)

I'll try not to give out spoilers, so I'll take as broad strokes and be as general as I can.
It takes the franchise and gives it the revamp and reboot it so dearly needed.  The younger, more active cast helping to re-energize it for the 21st century.  And it does it in such a way so as not to totally disregard the previous incarnations.  That's all I'm going to say about that aspect.

I loved the simplicity of the story, and the special effects were great.  A few of the actors took getting used to, but once you resign yourself to that, you're able to strap yourself in for a great ride.  They all brought their own flavor to the original characters and yet kept to the mythos that the old series and subsequent movies offered. A new dimension to each of the characters was added, thanks in part to J.J. Abrams' vision, and in a way, helped round out their backstory a little more.  Not all their attributes are likeable, but it helps make them more 'human' (sorry, Spock).

I think a few die-hards will complain about this and that (which is to be expected), but overall, I think for each die-hard they lose, a few more fans will be gained.  People who love sci-fi or action flicks in general will enjoy the movie, whether you're a Trekker (Trekkie?) or not.

Go see it! (and if you're so inclined, like I am, do the IMAX version.  This is the perfect movie for it.)

So, I caught "Wolverine" earlier this week, and I thought it was okay.  Did anyone else see it? Decent attempt to cram 30  years of continuity into one film.  There were cliché moments (downward shot and "NNNNNOOOOO! or the walking away while an explosion erupts behind), and dialogue was a bit awkward at times ("I'm the best at what I do...") that seem better written in comic books than said aloud.  I liked Jackman's and Schreiber's acting, but everyone else seemed tacked on.  I think I'd probably enjoy it more if I weren't so jaded and was 13-18 years old.  But all in all, a good attempt. It'll make money, and so will it's sequel.

On the art side, I wanted to thank Sander-Seto for the 3 month subscription. Yay! Self-spending averted for awhile longer.

Also, thanks for all the features of my artwork in the various journals and news articles here on DA. Too many to mention.  But I appreciate it nonetheless.  It's your love of my work that helps push me past my procrastination.

I'm finally getting off my ass and doing more deviations, and hopefully this will last (until my next dryspell, that is).  I'm also doing a lot of pop culture references which is kinda fun because it sometimes lends itself to the style I'm comfortable with.  On the downside, I can't turn them into prints because they contain copyrighted characters, but I guess it is what it is. :(

Maybe it's the fact that there are a lot of cool movies coming out this summer. Wolverine, Star Trek, Terminator, and Transformers to name a few. I grew up on all of these in one form or another, whether it be on TV, comics, movies or cartoons.  It's great to see them continuing on to the big screen and being revitalized in their own way after all this time. You gotta admit, it's a fun time to be a geek! And speaking of time going by, holy crap, it's been 10 years since Matrix and Star Wars ep.1 came out.  I just saw a 10 year anniversary thing in Best Buy.  Just feeling older by the second.

For those of you interested, I've added new prints to the DA store.  I've been getting requests for these in particular and I figure I'd upload them since I had some time:
