The audience reacted (some positively, others negatively) to the creators of the movie making a big deal out of her oversized eyes. Proving the CG for those eyes could be achieved was the top reason why Cameron took on the project in the first place. The reason I call that focus "bizarre" is because Alita's eyes are no different from any other manga/anime youthful character. As a fan of the original manga, Alita stood out from similar female manga/anime characters thanks to her hair. Her eyes were just standard for the art style.
If a company released a live action movie of Frozen tomorrow, and in that movie CGI had been used to make Elsa's head three times larger than a normal human, but no other character heads were changed, and the explanation given was simply "well, in the animated movie, Elsa's head was kinda large..." then I think it would be fair to assert the creators of that movie have a bizarre focus on Elsa's head size. The subsequent audience reaction (either positive or negative) would be irrelevant.
I just found the focus was put in the wrong place. It would be like someone making a new Street Fighter movie and giving Ryu huge CGI feet (since he does have large feet in the games) but then also giving him blonde hair. The reaction would be "hey guys - can we try to at least get the basics right, before needlessly messing with elements of the character that nobody is actually fussed about?"
Although zooming in reveals they are hazel, from a distance those eyes look suspiciously red, therefore I believe this is Ayane in a sneaky disguise! :O
Despite the movie's bizarre focus on her eye size, the defining characteristic of Alita's appearance has always been her ridiculously massive hair. Ever since the western movie, people seem to have completely forgotten that and so you get huge piles of fan art that don't look like her because they all just have the generic side-parted flat hair that the movie used. It's like having Cloud Strife with a bald head - it just isn't the same character any more.
Is the young girl with the pink "band" across her eyes a clever alternate version of Jubilee?
Asking because as a collector of all comics featuring Jubilee I'm trying to figure out whether this comic is going to cost me an arm and a leg or not. :)
If that is meant to be Jubes then I think I'm doomed, given the price of some of the variant covers of this issue! XD
