Should I still get a dA subscription? I've seen that previous subscribers' galleries do not really revert to the normal layout except that the photo boxes are smaller. So, I was thinking of spending it on other things.

I mean, you can do that, but you should see what else there is that you may want to get instead...I'm not really going to tell you you shouldn't or should, but don't go for it just yet.
