Terror From Above

Highway 76, somewhere in Pennsylvania
February 12, 2006
It was hot.  So very hot.  I could barely see straight from the blistering heat waves that threatened to burn the fur off my skin.  The small car in front of me was engulfed in flames, paint and plastic crackling and melting as they were consumed by the inferno.  I heard a scream from inside the passenger cabin that made my blood run cold.  The driver struggled to get out but was stuck in her seat; the seatbelt jammed in place.  It was deja vu.  I forced the door open and ripped the seatbelt apart but everything seemed to be moving in slow motion.  I felt like I was fighting a losing battle against the fire.  The driver was a woman, her face bloodied but her features strangely familiar.  Who was she?  As I worked to free the injured brunette, she gestured wildly at the back seat, where a

Head Out On the Highway

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
February 11, 2006
I awoke to a strange rattling sound.  It was still early in the morning and I didn't feel like getting up yet, so I put a pillow over my head and tried to go back to sleep.  No dice.  I got up and listened, then deduced that something had come loose in the air conditioner unit overnight and was bouncing around.  The noise stopped after I kicked the machine, so I went back to bed for another hour or so.
When I decided to start my day, I went to the bathroom and then put on my shirt.  While examining myself in the bathroom mirror, I noticed just how filthy my shirt was.  I'd gone through several days wearing the same shirt, and I didn't look very presentable wearing it.  It would be best to buy some new clothes before setting out.
Check-out time was 11 am.  I planned to get out earlier than that, but first I needed breakfast

A Pretty Good Day

Johnstown, Ohio
February 10, 2006
The next morning dawned much like the previous day: cold and gray.  I had slept in the car overnight and was very uncomfortable from the stiff driver's seat.  Undoubtedly the police were looking for the purple Neon, so I would have to get rid of it as soon as possible.  I felt a rumbling deep in my gut that told me it was time to eat something.  I hadn't had anything to eat since Charlotte bought me dinner at the Dairy Queen in Westerville.
But what to eat? I didn't have anything with me, and there wasn't any food stashed in the car's glove box or in the center console.  It looked like it was going to come down to me trying to buy something in town.  I sighed, then started the engine and waited for the defroster to thaw the iced-up windshield.  Once the glass was clear, I cycled the wipers once and then pulled out of the parking lot and

I was getting worried.  Where was that idiot Tarpon?  I was sure he'd show.  Usually when I had a hunch I was right.  But maybe this time I was wrong.  Still, it would be best to keep my guard up at all times.  I couldn't risk getting Charlotte Beauregarde hurt.
I peeked through the floral-print curtains on the kitchen window.  All I saw were my black pickup and Charlotte's gray Pontiac parked out by the shed in the side yard – that, and lots of snow.  A set of tracks led from my truck to the house.  Those were obviously mine; they were unmistakably paw prints.  I squinted against the glare of the blue-white snow and saw a second pair of footprints leading to the truck.  Those were definitely not mine!  Who had been snooping around my truck while I was in Charlotte's house?  For all I knew, it c

February 9, 2006
The morning dawned crisp, clear, and very cold.  My truck's thermometer indicated the outside temperature as 30 degrees.  The temperature inside the truck cab was a frigid 55 degrees.  I started the engine and turned the heater up to thaw myself out.  Once the cab was a more comfortable temperature, I was able to bring myself to look at the scene of beauty before me.  All around was a winter wonderland of snow.  The creek babbled with water flowing around built-up chunks of ice.  Several small woodland animals scurried across the ground and disappeared into the bushes.  A couple hundred yards away I could see a small ranch-style house nestled among the trees, its chimney emitting a white wisp of smoke into the pale gray early morning sky.
The tranquil morning calm was rudely interrupted by my stomach informing me that I hadn't eaten anything in the last twelve hou

The Ford truck plant bustled with activity.  I stared in wonder at the mind-blowing size and complexity of the operation for a brief moment, then heard the footsteps of my pursuers getting louder behind me.  I had no time to stop and admire the place; but if I was going to lose Farley and the BioCon security staff in there I was going to have to form a plan, and fast.
None of the assembly workers had yet seen me enter, but I knew that it was only a matter of time before someone did.  Would they think it was a prank and dismiss it, or would they call security?  Again, there was no time to think about it.  Farley rounded the corner and entered the building, followed closely behind by a few BioCon security guards.  I quickly observed that I appeared to be in the area just before the paint booth.  The truck bodies had already been dipped in the primer ba

I opened my eyes slowly.  All I saw above me was blue sky.  I felt warm.  I couldn't possibly still be sprawled on the snow-covered tarmac at Bonnyville Municipal Airport; the weather was too nice to be Canada in February.  Or was it even still February?  With the heat, it felt more like spring.  After a while, my senses returned to me and I sat up.  I scanned around my field of vision and found that I was perched on a large flat boulder surrounded by green grass.  The meadow was ringed by a clump of evergreen trees.  I guessed that the temperature was roughly 70 degrees, with no snow in sight.  This definitely wasn't Bonnyville!
If it wasn't Bonnyville, then where was I?  I vaguely recalled the events that happened just before I passed out.  Cardiff had said something about ... a forest.

Bonnyville, Alberta, Canada
February 3, 2006
Andrew tracked down his boss and told him that he was going to take his lunch break.  Then he got into his truck and headed for home.  Diana and I followed in the brown LTD, which I had to hotwire again to start.  After a short trip across town we reached his house.  The front door was off of its hinges and the gate was swinging open, but I saw no one around.
Andrew pulled into the driveway and I parked on the street.  I left the engine running in case we had to beat a hasty retreat.  Diana and I got out of the car and we walked toward the house.  I took the lead and very cautiously approached the front door.  I peeked inside the open doorway; the house appeared deserted.  The front door lay on the floor just beyond the threshold, its hinges bent and broken.  Small bits of wood and chipped paint surrounded it.

Andrew drove us to his home in Bonnyville and parked the Sonoma in the yard.  After he let Diana and me into the house, he covered the truck with a tarp.  Then he followed us inside.
I looked around; the house looked much like any other suburban house, but it was painted pale yellow in front and baby blue on the sides.  The family's Christmas lights were still up.  In Andrew's living room there was a fairly large TV with a PlayStation 2, surrounded by a small pile of empty soda cans and an open bag of chips.  Diana walked over to the sofa and lay down on her back, staring at the ceiling.  "God, I thought that was over," she said to no one in particular.  "How did they find us up here?"
"They have their ways, I guess," I said.  "Spy satellites know no boundaries."
"Do either of you want something to eat?" asked

Denver, Colorado

Diana and I spent the rest of the day at her parents' house.  I helped load their luggage into the trunk of the green Lexus, then I realized something.  If we were going to Canada via Bill's plane, there was no way to take my El Camino, too.  I would have to find a safe place to store it until this whole mess was over.  I looked up self-storage facilities in the phone book and prepared to rent a space to park my truck, when Bill saw what I was doing.  He came over and said, "Hey, you can follow us to the airport in your truck.  We keep the plane in a small hangar.  When we take the plane, Jean and I leave the car parked in there.  It should be big enough for both vehicles."
I liked his idea.  I put the phone book away.  Night fell and I busied myself looking at maps of the Alberta area in Bill's study.  Bill had told

Diana and I took a short nap in our motel room, then we packed up the truck and checked out.  Diana told me that the desk clerk looked at her very strangely because it was after 10 o'clock at night, a time when people arrive, not leave.  We left the Motel 6 and set out traveling east on the highway.  We crossed over Hoover Dam half an hour later and found ourselves in Arizona.  We drove through the desert, seeing very little other traffic other than 18-wheelers.  I would have liked to stop and see the Grand Canyon, but it was too dark.  We drove all night through northern Arizona, passing through the Four Corners just after 4 am.  Then we turned north and headed into Colorado.
Diana was driving.  She had been very reserved and quiet since the unfortunate incident with the crazy FBI agent.  I sat staring out the

God on My Side?

Las Vegas, Nevada
January 28, 2006 -- 7:34 PM
The agents opened fire on me as I drove away in my stolen Corvette.  I could hear the sound of bullets biting into the Corvette's fiberglass body and I had a bad feeling that the owner wasn't getting his car back -- in any way, shape, or form.  The black Tahoe followed me down Las Vegas Blvd, two agents hanging out of the side windows.  They were trying to aim their weapons at me, but I kept swerving in and out of dense evening traffic and it threw their aim off.
Coming up to a red light with the Tahoe right on my tail, I cut off a taxi and swerved toward the center median.  The median was set up with grass and palm trees, with a concrete curb to separate it from the street.  I bent the left-front rim and scraped the bumper jumping the curb, and then just barely missed a tree before dropping back onto the street with a thud.  I looked in my rearview mirror and saw that the Tahoe had tackled the small obstacl

Fur and Loathing in Las Vegas

January 27, 2006
Diana and I drove for hours on the nearly empty highway through the Mojave Desert.  We stopped for gas and to change drivers at a Chevron station on the outskirts of a small town not far beyond the Nevada state line.  Diana handled the payment, because as a human she was far less alarming to see in public than I.  She bought a few bags of trail mix for us to snack on during our journey into the unknown.
Night began to fall as we arrived in the neon metropolis of Las Vegas, its surreal circus of flashing lights and gaudy decorations nearly blinding in the weak evening light.  It was all so foreign to me.  We cruised the Vegas Strip, past dozens of strangely themed hotels.  There was no way for us to stay in any of the hotels; Diana didn't have enough money with her to pay for one night, and I didn't have a cent.  Luckily, there was a nice, cheap Motel 6 ne

It was getting dark when the headlights of Carlos's Isuzu came up the street.  When he turned into the driveway, the lights glared through the front window and woke me up from my nap.  I rubbed my eyes and looked at the clock.  It was after 6:00 pm.  Had I really been asleep that long?  I stood up and felt the throbbing in my left leg again.  It was still sore from having been dislocated earlier.
Carlos came through the front door carrying two large bags of groceries.  "Hey Fox, are you still here?" he called over the eye-level bags that blocked his view of the inside of the room.
"Yeah, I'm here," I said from the living room.
"I'm curious," he said, setting the bags down on the kitchen counter, "Where did you go today?"
"Oh...it's a long story," I told him.  "A long, painful story."
"What happened this time?" Carlos

There was a lot of traffic on Ball Road.  I passed under the freeway and came to a pair of ramps, one marked "Disneyland Resort Hotels", and the other, "Mickey and Friends Parking Structure".  I chose the Parking ramp, steering my armored Brinks truck to the left.  I followed the ramp and saw that the street ahead had been blocked off with cones, which were directing traffic into three lanes heading into a right turn.  I followed a minivan through the turn and encountered a large multilevel parking structure, the entrance to which was clogged with several long lines of cars.
I heard sirens coming up fast behind me.  The FBI Tahoe and the four Anaheim police cars had caught up with my slow armored truck.  There was no way I could wait out this thick mass of traffic without compromising the safety of myself or the civilians aro
