A few months ago I received a note here on dA titled "THE INVITATION TO THE DEATH-PROJECT" from a deviant here named Exilentia Exiff exi-exi.  She is an author, photographer, and the cooperating editor for  nEgoist - a Polish publishing house, that specializes in art books. She and her friend from Mexico, Hector Pineda HectorPineda were collaborating on a book of images which show the variety of the death-motive:

"You are invited to take part in this project. The album should be published in the spring 2009 in English version, in a quite limited /about 300 issues/ edition and a high quality of the book is expected. As a gratitude for your attendance in the project, you will get one issue of the album.
If you are interested in that cooperation, please let me know
" read the note.

Needless to say I was very interested! I was thrilled to death lol. She had originally selected my photo from the cemetery in Barcelona Spain called "El Beso de la Muerte" but I suggested she look at the color version: "Kiss of Death", which she liked better. Having recently acquired PS4 I worked on a newer (better?) final version "The Final Kiss" for the book.

At the last minute I was informed that the publisher's lawyer had reservations about using my image because of possible EU copyright law infringement. Exilentia informed me, however, that she had found another image of mine that she would include instead. Well I snapped right out of that depression quickly! The image she selected was a photo of an acrylic painting I had done in NYC for "the Bone Show" at the infamous Limelight, the church turned nightclub, made famous in the movie "Party Monster". My original image, "CruciFiction" (lower left),  was from a scan of a dusty 3x4 inch print. Luckily I had recently found a color slide of a later version of this painting which I scanned with my new scanner that handles film negatives and slides. The painting was  purchased by a NYC doctor for her private collection some time ago. Both photos were of unfinished versions. The finished painting had two flying saucers shooting beams down onto the figure and was titled "Jesus and the Flying Saucers".

The original submission and the final approved selection and re-submission.
I recently received the registered letter from Poland containing the contract which I signed and have returned. I will of course upload a photo of the book when I receive my copy provided all goes as planned. ..........................................................................................................................

History

Iconoclasm may be carried out by people of a different religion, but is often the result of sectarian disputes between factions of the same religion.

The Roman Empire's polytheist state religion's images were destroyed during the process of Christianisation.

In Europe during the Protestant Reformation and the religious conflicts following there were several outbreaks, with Protestants destroying Catholic or sometimes Protestant imagery.

In the world of Islam, there have been various periods of iconoclasm against images of other religions (eg Christianity, Buddhism, etc.) and those produced within Islam itself. The missing nose on the Great Sphinx of Giza is attributed to iconoclasm by a Sufi Muslim.

During and after the Russian Revolution, there was widespread destruction of religious and secular imagery.

Samuel Clemens "Mark Twain": "If there is a God, he is a malign thug."

Vincent Van Gogh: "I can very well do without God both in my life and in my painting, but I cannot, suffering as I am, do without something which is greater than I am, which is my life, the power to create."

Thomas Edison: "Religion is all bunk."

James Madison, American president :
"During almost fifteen centuries has the legal establishment of Christianity been on trial. What has been its fruits? More or less, in all places, pride and indolence in the clergy; ignorance and servility in the laity; in both, superstition, bigotry, and persecution."

Irving Berlin—the legendary songwriter who gave us "God Bless America" and "White Christmas"—was an atheist who hated Christmas.

Abraham Lincoln as a young man was an avid anti-christian and most likely an atheist. In his later years, he came to believe in God, but was still anti-religious in the sense that he rejected organized religion.

Katherine Hepburn : "I'm an atheist, and that's it. I believe there's nothing we can know except that we should be kind to each other and do what we can for each other."

Thomas Jefferson: "The Christian god is a three headed monster; cruel, vengeful and capricious. If one wishes to know more of this raging, three headed beast-like god, one only needs to look at the caliber of people who say they serve him. They are always of two classes: fools and hypocrites."

Iconoclasm

Iconoclasm, Greek for "image-breaking", is the deliberate destruction (or defamation) of important symbolic images (or icons) recognized within a culture, religion, or society. People who engage in or support iconoclasm are called iconoclasts, a term that has come to be applied figuratively to any person who breaks or disdains established dogmata or conventions.

Many of the defaced or beheaded statues of Greek and Roman art known today were the product of Christian iconoclasm. The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, was one of many pagan and Jewish buildings which would soon be destroyed by Christian violence, both official and mob-related.

Twilight of the Capitalist Gods

The avarice that was practiced to an excess in the last few years when financial assets assumed more significance than real assets has brought Capitalism to its knees. The irony of the success of the Chinese economy, constrained by the "failed ideology" of Communism, could cause one the question the validity of one of the West's most cherished modern dogmas, the temple of consumption.

The Big Bang

Upon careful examination of the entries and accompanying definitions, one can accurately assert that “chicken” is found on page 232 in the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary, while “egg” is not found until page 398. Therefore, the chicken clearly comes before egg.

Iconoclash

Blasphemer!, Infidel!, Sacrilege!, Profananity! cry the iconolaters.
The iconoclasts seek to destroy the totem poles, expose ideologies, and disabuse the idolaters. If images are so dangerous, why do we have so many of them? If they are innocent, why do they trigger so many and such enduring passions? Such is the enigma. What has been most violent? The religious urge to destroy idols to bring humanity to the right cult of the true God or the anti-religious urge to destroy the sacred icons and bring humanity to its true senses? An iconoclash indeed.

A couple of weeks ago, while I was in New York, I thought I'd go to Coney Island again. It had been almost exactly 20 years since I last visited there. I remebered how much I enjoyed the fresh ocean breezes and the amusement arcades along the boardwalk. I was looking forward to going to the "Freak Show" again with a new digital camera this time. Unfortunately I picked the wrong day....the freak show was closed when I got there. Although I was disappointed there was plenty of fun stuff to do and things to see. I had a really good time there and took loads of pictures.

A few days ago I started going through them and thought about doing a journal. I started Googling around and, to my horror, started reading articles about the imminent closing of much of the amusement arcade portions of Coney Island, particularly Astroland!! The park's longtime operator, Carol Hill Albert, is expected to close Astroland after Labor Day.
mermaid

Thor Equities, which purchased the park for $30 million last year, could clear the site for its planned $1.5 billion Vegas-glitz entertainment complex. It will be replaced by a new park, hotel, restaurants and time-share units on 10 acres of land between West 10th and West 15th Streets and south of Surf Avenue in the Brooklyn neighborhood; Astroland occupies about one-third of that area.:(

Coney Island is a peninsula, formerly an island, in southernmost Brooklyn, New York City, USA, with a beach on the Atlantic Ocean. The name probably comes from the Dutch name for the island: Conyne Eylandt,or Konijn Eiland (Rabbit Island) using modern Dutch spelling. Coney Island became a resort after the Civil War as excursion railroads and the Coney Island & Brooklyn Railroad streetcar line reached the area in the 1860s.

Heading Home Soon

Journal Entry: Fri Apr 25, 2008, 6:36 AM
May 7
All good things sadly come to an end. The time to return to work and my "regular" life is near. I have gotten behind in replying to comments and faves recently because I had no internet access for some time. And also because I'm so bad at it in general lol. But I do appreciate any comment and fave or critiques.

April 25
I have just spent two of the most wonderful and fascinating weeks of my life in Istanbul Turkey. I was very lucky to have been in the company of the gracious and talented Hermetic-Wings :iconhermetic-wings: from DA for many of the days of my trip. He was so very helpful in so many ways...showing me so many great things...from mosques to palaces and museums, how to use the great public transit of that fabulous city and meeting many warm and hospitable Istanbul residents. He even introduced me to his charming and humorous father! I am so sad that I had to leave Istanbul.
but I will have so many great memories to cherish forever and a new dear friend for life.
For that I am very glad. :)
