DW - 2012 Tardis Console [with correct info] by DoctorWhoOne DW - 2012 Tardis Console [with correct info] by DoctorWhoOne
Re-uploaded due to the fact that it seems I got the information on the original upload of this wrong about what each sides function is, so thanks to Doctor Who Adventures issue 303, I can now state the real actual function of all 6 sides of this brand new Tardis Console, so if you end up looking at the original upload, the information is wrong as I copied it from 'The Tardis Handbook' by Steve Tribe which detailed the 2010 version of the Tardis Console as it seems I wrongly assumed that each function would remain the same despite the change in design.

So here is the following correct information regarding the new Tardis console as stated by Doctor Who Adventures -

CONTROL PANEL 1 - COMMUNICATIONS
This section is for outgoing communications and sending time coordinates and other control settings to different parts of the Tardis.

CONTROL PANEL 2 - HELM
This controls the Tardis engines and allows the Doctor to steer the Tardis through time and space manually.

CONTROL PANEL 3 - INTERFACE
This is a new intelligent panel that allows the Doctor to directly connect with the mind of the Tardis.

CONTROL PANEL 4 - INFORMATION PROCESSOR
This section is for processing and displaying incoming information, which can be relayed to the screens above the console.

CONTROL PANEL 5 - AUXILIARY POWER SYSTEMS
These are the auxiliary power controls - a back up for all systems.

CONTROL PANEL 6 -MANUAL ADJUSTMENT
This clock-like panel is for manual adjustment to the time coordinates and acts as a fail safe time control.

Are you going to add the 2014 Tardis console room?

Peter Capaldi just has the Matt Smith 2012 console room that's just been changed a little with a different colour to the lights and a few new features.

Namely the different bookshelves, and chalk-boards. Also, the new coat-rack, if I'm not mistaken.

Don't think i've noticed a coat-rack. Can be a bit hard to spot everything when the Tardis console room seems have dimmed the lights a little further I think.

There might be a coat-rack there, I'm not quite sure. I could've sworn I've seen one, though.

Does your source give the positions of the panels in relation to the doors? I think that's the one thing we're missing now.
Does it also show previous consoles for comparison? I think Pertwee had the right idea. He put lables on every switch and button for continnuity's sake.

One amusing shot is of 7 using (presumably) panels two and six at the same time. 3 and 4 were often seen doing that by spreading their arms, while 5 and 6 would take a quick step from one to the other.
Because Sylvester McCoy is so short, he was sliding a lever with his foot on one panel and pushing a button with his umbrella on the other.

Like it says above, I got the correct info from Doctor Who Adventures, but if you know which panel is facing towards the Tardis then you'll know which 1 faces the doors of the Tardis, which is control panel 4, the Information Processor on the modern console.

did you know that the reason the tardis console has six sides is because it was designed to have 6 operators?

Yeah, pretty obviously way before that nugget of information was revealed.

I'm building my own version of the Tardis and this actually helps a lot as a reference. Thanks for posting this :)

On control panel 1, if the patch board matrix worked on pins instead of wires, it would've added an additional touch of Britishness to it.
Synth nerds will understand.

Very nice! One thing though: in the newest episode, "The Bells of St. John," when the Doctor and Clara first run into the TARDIS and he gives her a quick rundown of what he is and what he's doing, he actually goes to a panel on the rail surrounding the console and does something as if there were more panels around the console! Weird, right? I don't think they ever meant us to fully understand the TARDIS in any way. ;)
Also, could I ask that you put the secondary labels onto the picture itself (i.e. Communications, Helm, etc.)? It's a bit tricky looking from the panel to its name in the description. :)

Tell ya the truth, Ive never really liked the 7th/8th Doctor version of the Tardis Console Room. Much too dark, and I'm not keen on a wood-built console.

I think it's beautiful. Got a whole Victorian time traveller feel to it.....but to each his own :)

I'm not a fan of 9/10's like a lot of people.... though it's only because it doesn't have visible doors/stairs leading to the rest of the Tardis haha. Aesthetically I quite like them all in some ways.

So in order for me its:

8's Tardis
new Tardis
classic Tardis (yeah they changed slightly but they all look similar)
11's Tardis
10's Tardis
4's secondary console room

Nice work, and at last we finally have an explanation for that bizarre "blank" panel (aka "interface"). It's the telepathic circuits!
Reply
:icondoctorwhoone:
DoctorWhoOne Featured By Owner Jan 24, 2013
Well I just labelled each one, so Interface seemed the right word to use.

Still yeah, it clearly is the telepathic circuits, so surely the telepathic circuits in Jon Pertwee's time must have allowed the Doctor to communicate with the mind of the Tardis, or maybe it didn't work like that.

Given that most TARDIS controls seem to operate by the power of plot I suspect it will or will not work in the same way as the "classic" telepathic circuits as required ;)

Well we have yet to see the Doctor actually use the Interface on the new console.

I'm guessing he may use in the upcoming story 'Journey to the centre of the Tardis'.

Yeah, I think they are trying to make the outside of the Tardis look battered again. I like the outside nice and clean as it was in 'The Eleventh Hour'.

Same, I don't mind a few scuffs and stuff...a bit of dirt but...they've chipped wood and paint off it in big amounts.
