Gimp 2.8 Photoshop Tweaks by doctormo Gimp 2.8 Photoshop Tweaks by doctormo
To help a fellow deviant, I've put together a download that anyone with Gimp 2.8 on Linux can use to make their copy of gimp look more like Adobe Photoshop and make people more comfortable.

I've taken various bits of guides online and various tweaks. All you have to do is download the file, unzip it. Then in the file manager go to your home folder, show hidden files, delete or move your old .gimp-2.8 configuration folder out of the way, and replace with the new one. Then load gimp. Then me know if it works for you or if it fails.

Update: Icon were blurry in the original icon theme. I've patched them all up to be much clearer.
Update2: The drop here text is now gone and the default background when loading is the same dark grey.
Update3: Now on github github.com/doctormo/GimpPs

It's a collection of Gtk/Gimp themes. The construction and settings have been known for a long time.

If you'd like the technical details, there's a github page where you can ask those questions. But reading the gtk files is a first go. It's very much like css.

This might be because my resolution is different. Can you check the gimp settings you've downloaded for a window size?

Works nicely on Linux Mint 17.3 (ROSA) under VM Virtualbox with windows 10 as a host. However, starting Gimp as a regular user gives you some access permission denied nags , so use GIMP as superuser and it works very nicely out of the box.

This is done by opening a terminal
then type: su [ENTER]
password[ENTER]
gimp[ENTER]

For those who wish to install this on LINUX MINT, to see the .gimp folder in NEMO (file explorer) you can click VIEW->show hidden files. Home/Username/.gimp-2.8

I found this file through the following tutorial:

www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2016/08/ma…

Thank you for this doctor MO.

On a last note:

- The folders are all empty in this zip file, it's supposed to be that way and does not mean it is corrupt.
- do NOT delete any folders from the original .gimp-2.8 folder, just merge the one from this download and overwrite where needed.

Don't run Gimp as a super user. Change the permissions of the files if needed:

sudo chown -R $USER:$USER ~/.gimp-2.8
sudo chmod -R ug+rw ~/.gimp-2.8

Running things as root to get around permission problems, creates more permission problems, since root will start saving files under his own username, but in your home directory. Bad things happen.

Thanks!!! Worked great in Windows 10 too. Just backed up the Themes and base files before moving everything from the zip to the .gimp-2.8 folder and it loaded up perfectly.

It's a very old design and I think they're changing it by default for the next version.

I've downloaded the .zip file, extracted it, and showed the hidden files. But there are no hidden files. Can't see any hidden files/folder. :(

That's why it is hidden. Hidden means, with your standard settings you can't see it.
Hidden files are starting with a dot before the file- or foldername.
In this case it is .gimp-2.8 not gimp-2.8
In many Linux distributions you can change to see or hide hidden files in your file manager by pressing:
[ctrl] +  [H]
In Windoze iit's quite more complicated, like always on WIndows.

I know what hidden means, thank you! :)
And yes, I've already tried the Ctrl + H shortcut, but no luck. Anyway, thanks!

Hmm, this is odd because that's what I'm using and it works well using the instructions here.

Not sure there is anything I can do, maybe look into command line zip utility.

100% the easiest installation ever!

In your user's directory, called the shortcut name: ~/

◦ allow viewing hidden files and folders
◦ download .zip file linked above
◦ rename old folder to .gimp-2.8.Old
◦ extract zip file to new folder .gimp-2.8
◦ start the Gimp, now with a new facelift: c◦◦l beans!

Thanks for this. I have to learn Photoshop keyboard shortcuts soon, and using them within GIMP will advance the learning curve.
