2015 - New Year, New Beginnings
Journal Entry: Sun Jan 4, 2015, 2:19 PM

2014 was a helluva year, and I don’t understand how January can feel like so long ago in some regards, and yet each month slipped by faster than I could keep up. Still, I have to say I’m content, both personally and artistically. 2014 certainly started off as one beast and eventually settled into another. And here we are in 2015, and me without any resolutions!
Last year, in terms of my art, I successfully launched/funded my first Kickstarter for WARBIRDS OF MARS. I’m loving how the first full-length issue of the comic is coming along, but it’s taking so much more time to complete than I had hoped. Still, I got my first Daily Deviation in the process.
I feel as though I’ve honed my craft, style, and work ethic. I’ve got commissions on my plate, ideas for projects and books in process.
Plus, I’ll have a classic SINBAD 5-page comic story published later this year by AIRSHIP 27, and I’m working on an 11-page comic of the classic pulp-character DOMINO LADY for MOONSTONE Comics. Things are picking up; just gotta keep the momentum. I’m excited.
On the personal side of things, life’s upheavals have calmed. I woke up one day and… well, let’s just say change was in the air as was understanding of the place of things. In any case, this summer I met The Girl I’ve Been Waiting For. The lovely Jenn and her daughter have come into my life, bringing so much of what I have been looking for… and they were already Doctor Who fans to boot (no conversions to my personal religion necessary)! Since then I’ve managed to wean off of my low dosage of anti-depressants and lost 5 lbs in the process. I should also point out that not being on medication is a money-saver. Surprise, I know.
The world – both at large and closer to home with friends and family – is worth the extra effort (and time, when you can take it) with the right person at your side.
For what it’s worth, balance in all things within as well as without is the most important thing in life. That’s my philosophy, anyhow.
Well, that’s it for now – work to do, chaps! I hope you all have a great year!

Kickstarter Re-Launch of WARBIRDS OF MARS
Journal Entry: Tue May 6, 2014, 4:47 PM

I’ve re-launched my Kickstarter! Issue #1 of my #dieselpunk #comic book WARBIRDS OF MARS needs your help to succeed!
www.kickstarter.com/projects/s…
If funding is successful, it means the new ‘Golden-Age’ full-color comic can go forward; an exciting first issue of the retro-scifi comic series, continuing the successful web-comic in which aliens invaded WWII!
Warbirds of Mars is a 1940s-set pulp-style sci-fi adventure web-comic created and illustrated by Scott P. ‘Doc’ Vaughn and written by Amazon best-selling author Kane Gilmour. We're taking it to the next level with a full-color comic series, and we need your help to complete a 20-30 page issue #1! You get an exclusive version of #1 before anyone else, either in print or digital depending on your pledge level. We'll take it from there, either to be published via our own small-press label or through a larger publisher (should the material get picked up)! But we can't complete the production of this exciting new art without your help!

Kickstarter Launched for WARBIRDS OF MARS
Journal Entry: Fri Mar 7, 2014, 7:19 PM

_
www.kickstarter.com/projects/s…
Long-running web-comic Warbirds of Mars is changing its format and asking for your support to help fund the completion of a lengthy ‘new-pulp’, dieselpunk graphic novel. Inspired by the comics and films of yesteryear, Warbirds has already tackled comics, a radio show, a short-story anthology and cheesecake pinups to help tell its tale. Now its creators are taking it to the next level.
Set in an alternate World War II, the story features a cast of heroes fighting for freedom against the race of aliens that invaded on D-Day who now occupy much of the globe. Being the 1940s, the invaders are simply referred to as ‘Martians’ (Think War of the Worlds meets Mars Attacks with a dash of The Rocketeer or The Shadow). They attacked the Earth and superseded WWII, taking over many of the major cities of the world. The resistance forces struggle to re-unite the ragged and dispersed militaries of the planet in the hopes of fighting back with new technology.
This pulp-style sci-fi adventure was created and drawn by Scott P. ‘Doc’ Vaughn and written by Amazon.com best-selling author Kane Gilmour. Initially formatted like an old-school weekly newspaper strip, the graphic novel will feature the reprinted run of the web series then switch gears to ‘golden-age’ style comics. There will be somewhere between 60 – 100 new color pages that help complete the current story arc.
For the past four years, ‘Doc’ and Kane have taken the Martian Killers and their struggle from New York to the West, to Europe and back again. They further expanded the Warbirds Universe by publishing Warbirds of Mars: Stories of the Fight! via Amazon, Barnes & Noble and other platforms, in paperback as well as in ebook formats. The book has been nominated for seven New Pulp Awards this year and features stories by Jeff Mariotte, Sean Ellis and Ron Fortier (among others) as well as illustrations by artists like Mike Debalfo, Bill Farmer, John Lucas and Dan Parsons.
“For me,” says Doc, “combining the likes of Mars Attacks, War of the Worlds and World War II seemed logical. Regardless of originality, I wanted a crack at all of these concepts combined, hopefully in a new light. I approached my friend Kane Gilmour with these ideas, pitching it to him as a web-comic. To my eternal glee and gratitude, Kane ran with it, and the still-developing results are here for you to see. I hope you enjoy Warbirds of Mars and that it leads you on your own journey of discover or a trip down memory lane.”

BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS!!
Geez-o-petes! Where do I even begin?! Ok, ok, first-thing's-first: I am officially announcing the publication of my book…
WARBIRDS OF MARS: STORIES OF THE FIGHT!
"It's 1948 and WWII never ended! Instead, Earth was invaded by creatures from the stars! One small group of resistance fighters has banded together to hold the line...at all costs!" www.amazon.com/Warbirds-Mars-S…

Based on my webcomic, www.warbirdsofmars.com, written by Kane Gilmour www.KaneGilmour.com and drawn by me, the story tells of an alternate neo-pulp/retro-scifi world where Martians invaded and heroes arose. A year and a half of hard work has yielded an incredible anthology of prose short stories and full page illustrations by incredibly talented folks. Available now in print for $18.99 or on Kindle and Nook for $5.99. With stories by Sean Ellis, Ron Fortier, Stephen M. Irwin, Jeffrey J. Mariotte, Alex Ness, Chris Samson, J.H. Ivanov, David Lindblad and Megan E. Vaughn, illustrated by Jean Arrow, Andy Carreon, Mike Debalfo, Bill Farmer, Matthew Goodall, Christian Guldager, Robert Hack, Rob Hicks, John Lucas, Paul Roman Martinez, Nathan Morris, Dan Parsons, Nik Poliwko, Richard Serrao, Doc Vaughn, and Jason Worthington.

We're premiering the print edition of the book at the PHOENIX COMICON, MAY 23-26 www.phoenixcomicon.com/ and we will have a panel discussing turning our webcomic into an illustrated prose anthology: phoenixcomicon.com/programming… Or come by our table at BOOTH #2042 to buy a copy of it and the print edition of the webcomics (or our other books and prints) and get it all signed by me and Kane!
NOW, this couldn't have come along at a better time. As you may have noticed in my last Journal, docredfield.deviantart.com/jou… I've had plenty of my own projects as well as other paying gigs on my plate over the past few months and to hold me for weeks (and then some) to come. I've been thinking, "ya know, I should seriously consider going part time at the ol' day job and full-time with art and writing." Well, the Universe has heard me and the big Picard in the sky said 'Make it so.' I found out a few weeks ago that my day job is eliminating my position… which is cool! As of June 1 2013 I will officially be full-time artist/writer and only part-time at the ol' grind. Commissions are OPEN!
Yours,
Doc

It's gonna be a helluva year! I'm so busy, I'm considering having myself cloned! Of course, that in itself has logistical problems entailed, so I think I'll just stick to hard work and perseverance. First off, I guess I should say thanks to my friends and family for helping me get through last year – it was a tough one emotionally and creatively. Second, I want to say thank you to Ang for helping to make this year so wonderful from Day 1 (literally).
So, with that outta the way, let me tell you what's on the books for this year!
1. Completing a grown-ups only Pay (web)comic for Mind-Control: "Sideshow".
2. Private Commissions.
3. 28 pencil/ink pages of ACES! #1 for Sara Barrett and RZG Comics. This Alternate history/dieselpunk book will feature colors by Bill Farmer (Farmtown ) and may become a 4-5 issue miniseries.
4. Warbirds of Mars .com "Sunday Strips" pages. …I'm so behind on my own series, but then again it is partially because we will be releasing:
5. WARBIRDS OF MARS: Stories of the Fight! A new prose anthology of short stories set in the WoM Universe. 15 tales from authors such as WoM co-creators Kane Gilmour and Scott P. Vaughn, comics legend Brian Augustyn, thriller maestro Sean Ellis, New Pulp master Ron Fortier, Supernatural Duke of Spook Stephen Irwin, sf/fantasy poet and prose writer Alex Ness, and southwestern horror and comics author Jeff Mariotte - each illustrated by the talented likes of Mike Debalfo, Bill Farmer, Dan Parsons, John Lucas, Robert Hack, Yours Truly and MORE! This book/ebook from Quickdraw Books debuts in May at:
6. The Phoenix ComiCon! www.phoenixcomicon.com/ May 23-26. I'll have new Art Prints, the WoM book and more!
7. Pulp illustrations for Ron Fortier's Airship 27 neo-pulp Lance Star Sky Ranger
8. I'll finally be releasing Hero-Lore Book I – Shards of Destiny through Kane's Quickdraw Books label in print and ebook, with interior illos by me and a cover by Shane Braithwaite. This is the SF/Fantasy Space Opera I've been working on pretty much my whole life, so I'm excited to get this project off the ground at last! PLUS: Other novels to follow…
So that's it! Plenty on my plate, as you can see. I can only hope to also have time to complee any random art and so on in there. So, I've gotta get to work, yo! Best wishes to you all and I look forward to chatting with you, seeing your work, and hopefully so much more!
Yours,
Doc

It's been "back to the ol' drawing board," as the Looney Tunes were famous for sayin'. Well, back to the art desk as much as possible for me of late, but not without a much-needed actual vacation from art, day-job, people, home, the mundane; you name it.
So I took a trip to Oahu, Hawaii (www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?… all by myself. Of course, much of the reason I had a fanfuckingtastic time was because friends like Laura and Linda Jane (fav.me/d5fdd0z) showed me around in their spare time to places like Buddhist temples, rainforest waterfalls, volcanic craters, lookout points, museums, hotels, Tiki bars, hikes, beaches and other destinations that all truly made me feel like I was in a different country, world, or movie - not that Waikiki's population almost entirely of Japanese tourists wasn't enough to do that. Anyway, travel broadens the mind, Sarah Jane, and also the heart. But it was also a trip to re-charge the batteries of art as much as life, and my excursion to Pearl Harbor was one goal that definitely did that. Seeing the USS Arizona wreckage, the tower and hangers that survived Zero strafing runs and bomb raids, and picking up some cool 40s-themed merch (and of course a Hawaiian shirt) have all helped to reinvigorate me for my work on 'WARBIRDS OF MARS' (www.warbirdsofmars.com). But its slow going, unfortunately, between a number of other projects, including the forthcoming WARBIRDS OF MARS short-story anthology book that Kane Gilmour (www.kanegilmour.com) and I will be editing (and Kane will be publishing) in the near future but more on that soon. Kane will also be publishing some of my novels and other work in the coming year, so I'm in preparation for that, including new artwork (or re-scanning old illustrations). I'm hoping to hear more/start work on ACES! soon (fav.me/d4tg0cl) , but in the meantime I've taken an erotic comic commission (fav.me/d5c9kvk) (previous work for same site fav.me/d370n2f) that is due before the year's out, so I'm hard at work on all of the above (phew!) . And somewhere in there I have to finish a novel, draw other commissions, and have a Halloween party. Holy crap..! What am I doing writing a journal?! I have work to do!!
Anyway, best wishes to all of you. Drop me a line, tell me what's up with you and what horror movies you're watching this October.. or whether or not you've read this entire, long-winded entry for that matter.
Yours,
Doc
