California in the modern day is often perceived as a liberal bastion of tolerance and progressivism. This is certainly assisted by its diverse population, and being a center of world cultures in a “melting pot” that makes California famous for a pluricultural environment. The incumbent President (as of 2016) is even a woman of Chinese descent.

This often makes it all the more uncomfortable for people when discussing the fact that in its past, California has had a long history of racial bias and segregation. In many ways, it was less terrible than countries like the Confederate States of America, which quite happily hung on to slavery up until 1905 and even then denied its Afro-American citizens basic rights until the Red African Rebellions, but was nonetheless a very real history of pain and hurt for millions of people.
