Let's say Murphy is a very interesting horse. Although there's quite alot nervous energy bundled up inside his chest, he's a thinker nonetheless. Confronted with a technical course or a problem, he turns things over and over in his mind until a solution is found, or he found the perfect line.
Aside from this, he's just a cool horse. He loves to roll and get dirty fur, he loves flowers and he loves to run as fast as he can. That's what makes him a great racehorse. He just got that will. He comes up to you in the pasture, waiting for new adventures. Racing and jumping are his elements for sure. Herd life however, isnt so much. He hasn't got many friends, but it seems okay like that.
His greatest fear are random things that come up in nature (Trees... Stones...), and his best friend are salty treats. He'd give his soul for them, Sam guesses.
So, concluding it all, Murphy is a friendly young horse, that - if you keep calm - gives all of his heart for you and the races. If you get nervous however... It's like Nicholas Evans said.
