Mini-Mag Orion style cargo ship - Carthage 3
Other angles:
Link 2

Merchant vessel of Mars - Carthage

Length: 207m
Height: 51m (58 with habitat sections expanded)
Width: 80m
Dry mass: 1 800 tons
Full load: 18 100 tons
Complement: 16 +32 passengers

Main engine: Mini-Mag Orion
Thrust: 1,87 MN
Propellant: Pulse units
Propellant supply: 10 000 tons
Mass flow: 12 kg/s
Acceleration while fully loaded: 0,1 m/s
Delta-v with 6000t of cargo: 126 km/s
Delta-v with no cargo: 275 km/s

Support ships carried:
2x Wrench

Carthage class was the first large interplanetary cargo ship utilized by Martians that was built in significant numbers. Besides carrying large amounts of cargo for trading purposes, it was also used in construction of outposts in the asteroid belt, as well as space stations. For that reason, it was fielded with large forward facing whipple shield, as well as additional habitat sections, which where used to carry small amounts of passengers. Cargo was manipulated with the two, externally carried, Wrench class utility ships, which where also used to perform maintenance on the ship itself, as well as assistance on visiting construction sites. Redundant communication equipment is carried so that each individual ship could be used as a mobile communication relay, something that was needed in the early days of setting up the Martian presence in the Solar System, before dedicated stations where set up in strategic locations. Not a fully dedicated design, Carthage class was a bit of "jack of all trades" ship, with many functions crammed into it, decreasing its performance as a primary cargo ship. For this reason, over time it was pushed out of service by dedicated cargo ships, most notably, by the mass-produced Venerian ships. During its lifetime it was a very common and reliable ship, and it served a very important role in spreading out Martian reach.

The ship is propelled by a Mini-Mag Orion style engine, with a minor modification to enable simple refueling even in areas with minimal industrial development. Instead of carrying completed pulse units, this ship carries individual elements, and then combines them in a 3D printer styled assembling mechanism, located between the nozzle and propellant tanks, storing only a limited number of completed pulse units. With over 70% of the propellant mass being aluminum, and then again over 28% being mylar, the more exotic curium and beryllium take up less than 1% of the total propellant mass. Aluminum and mylar are carried in filament form, and could be refueled pretty much anywhere, requiring only the basic infrastructure. Curium and beryllium are carried already combined into pellets, if the ship's destination can't replenish them they can be carried in excess amounts, without meaningfully hampering overall performance. Additionally, two side mounted nuclear reactors provide power, and 250t of hydrogen are carried as coolant, but can also be flushed through the reactors to provide limited thrust and maneuvering capability.

So, I don't know if anyone will care about this, but I'll put it out here anyway. There are going to be changes in my activity here! :O

The most obvious one is that I've been playing around with 3D printers for a while now, and I'm going to start posting my prints here. These will not be spaceship related (so far at least), instead it's going to be some simple jewelry and decorations.

Also, from time to time, I like to write short stories, but I'm having trouble actually finishing them, so I'd also like to post them as well, if nothing else, than to push myself to complete them.

Spaceships and space related stuff will keep coming, I still love making them, and have many in different stages of completion. My current hindrance being my constant lack of time and some date loss that produced many frustrations. The change here will be that I'm tired of the ''Sort of realistic...'' titles, so from now on, please do assume that everything I do is still just sort of realistic, even if it's not in the title :)

I know I'm not very active, but I have to say, deviantart community has been amazing towards me, I've been given many useful advices, and an astounding amount of support. So please, do keep it coming, even if I don't always respond as fast as I'd like, I'm always happy to see new notes and comments.

Thank you :)
