X-MEN Animated Vol.1 Box Art by DNA-1 X-MEN Animated Vol.1 Box Art by DNA-1
If you're about my age, then you probably have fond memories of the X-MEN: The Animated Series that ran on Fox Kids in the 90s. Lasting 76 episodes (second only to Batman: TAS) it was Marvel's longest running animated show and brought a number of famous X-storylines to the small screen, including The Dark Phoenix Saga and Days of Future Past. I was a big fan, and I remember being BEYOND excited when that first episode came on.

So imagine my surprise and delight when I was asked to provide box art for the DVD release(!). I got into comics specifically because of Jim Lee's legendary work on Uncanny X-men, and THIS was the team I grew up with. So my cover art is intended as a love letter to these characters, and honestly, I'm just excited to watch these cartoons again!

Hi DNA-1! I'm LARRY HOUSTON, the Producer/Director of TH X-MEN.  You did a great job of capturing the visual fun I had directing the series for the first four years of the show. I'm touring with the Story Editors at different conventions, on this the 25th Anniversary of THE X-MEN:TAS on October 31st this month. We'll be at the STAN LEE KOMIKAZE Comic Book Convention October 29th so, if you can, come on down! I'll be happy to answer any questions you had about the series. And thanks to all of you for supporting the show!

If you're counting live action, I'd also put Agents of SHIELD in there as well.  Just about my favorite thing on tv right now. :)

I do like Agents of SHIELD, It's great. I mean during the first few episodes, they were a bit boring for me but it started to get slightly better and better each time :D

That's accurate.  Now I feel like it's firing on all cylinders, especially after that last episode.

what do you think for those new Marvel shows like Ultimate Spider-Man, Avengers Assemble and Hulk Agents of SMASH. I mean they're okay but they won't be superior to all of the other Marvel shows I've mentioned. I mean the animation may be good and I did like the fact that they're bringing in new characters but I just disliked the storylines on these new shows and the fact that they've cancelled EMH, Wolverine and The X-Men and Spectacular Spider-Man etc.. Even Agents of SHIELD is better than those shows.

I wanted to like Assemble, but it's just not as good as EMH.  Assemble just feels a bit dumbed down for me, and it lacks all the great characters/storylines from the comics.  Bummer.  Haven't seen SMASH.  Ultimate Spidey has been pretty good.

I know I mean EMH is basically like how X-Men TAS along with how the Justice League, Justice League Unlimited is. I mean if Bruce Timm and Paul Dini worked for Marvel animation rather than Jeph Loeb, they could improve the animation in EMH and bring in more characters and storylines into it like: like all of the X-Men (from Wolverine and The X-Men TV series), the current roster of Guardians of the Galaxy, Nova, Spider-Woman, Morbius, Dr. Strange, Satana, Damion Hellstorm, Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Elektra, Ghost Rider, Mephisto, Black Heart, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Hercules, Amadeus Cho, Misty Knight, Taskmaster, She-Hulk, Betty Ross, Namor, U.S. Agent, Young Avengers, Avengers Academy, Tigra, Shang-Chi, Hyperion, Captain Universe, Sentry, Moon Knight, Colleen Wing, Thunderbolts, Arcade, The Hood, Madame Masque, The Hand, Thanos, Black Bolt, Crystal, Medusa, Count Nefaria including Civil War, Dark Reign, Secret Wars, Siege, Infinity, Avengers Disassembled and so much more... (apologies for the long statement but you get the idea) ;)

That's what was cool about EMH: in many cases, it was the first time a lot of those characters had ever been shown on screen.

WOW! Hey, congratulations! Got the DVDs and you've done a bang up job representing the series with the cover art. As someone who also grew up with the series and watched it religiously every morning before school I can appreciate the honour it must be to get this opportunity.

Not a big selling point in terms of marketing art I guess.  General public doesn't really know who she is.  Plus, she's on Cover #2.

When they first hit the shelf I fell in love with the box art and the embossed foil finish on the cover sleeves made them a "must have" for my DVD collection. I about had a heart attack when I went back to get them and they were GONE. Not sold out just pulled off the shelf and GONE. Finally got the set from Amazon.com ... (and there was happiness in the land).

Thanks, man. Checked out your stuff, and you're on the right track. Digital's a good way to go and more future-proof than the traditional method. Plus, you can get a higher page rate. Would recommend that you look at some of the top comic guys and analyze why people are drawn to them--see if you can amp up the sense of personal style in your work. Cheers!

I'm only 13, but I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to catch replays of this on the rare occasions our TV is working. As a total superhero nerd, I found things I enjoyed in Evolution and Wolverine&the X-men, but nothing beats this 90s cartoon. Rouge and Gambit look especially great here, btw - love the angles we're seeing them from.
