I do not know exactly should I write about your photoshop skills or your photographic skills here, as I also checked out your tutorial, where I could see the original image. The final image is a nice one, it doesn't have much impact, cause such shots had been done so many times before, but it is always good to exercise. While I like the over saturated orange/red tint, I am getting distracted by the burnt out yellow on the left side (that was later darkened? and looks desaturated now, which doesn't make much sense with the over saturated orange). Also the bubbles on the top (specially top right) are so weakly defined you could easily removed them or enhanced them a bit more.

The original image shows your weakest point - lighting. The reflection was probably hardest to remove, next time use a big sheet of black paper with a hole cut for the lens to remove the reflection. Also you can use some tin foil under the water tank (plus on the side - if you have light coming just from one side) to reflect light back to the subject, that should give you more bubble definition.

Also now I can see that the weakly defined drops in the final image are the ones that seem to be on the glass itself from previous shots, maybe using a rug between each shot would help with that <img src="e.deviantart.com/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" title=":) (Smile)" />

Overall it is a nice try on this ever popular subject, and it shows you can frame and use your shutter speeds correctly. And that you are trying to give this shot a bit more meaning (vide heart). I would say - keep trying and exercising, that is what makes us good photographers.

hey martha, thank you very much for your critical comment.
as you can see, on every picture i write, that critical comments are really appreciated, but it's quite hard here on dA, to get fair critical comments like yours.

first i wanna answer the original picture in my tutorial. you're right, the original picture is really bad. my targed on every shot is, not to edit the picture.
when i was trying to make a splashing-shot with black background, the first picture was really bad (bad lightning). it's the original picture in my tutorial ;-) with this, i want to show, how "easy" to improve a bad picture.
it's fun, because i've seen the reflection on the glass (last week) & i took a black paper with a hole, like your advise ;)
after playing around to get a better lightning etc. i got this picture: [link]
on this, i just had to edit the curves & some little stuff ;-)

as you wrote, i have the problem (on both pictures) with a different brightness on the fruit. that's why i had to edit/improve it in photoshop. i know, it's not perfect (the left side of the fruit & the different yellow etc.) but i know why. i have two different external flashes from different producer. the one on the left side is too bright & i can not make them more dark. maybe a have to buy a second external flash from the same producer...

to answer your question, yes, i've tried to fix the overexposed left side of the fruit by make it more dark. overexposed pictures is a big problem, there's no way to fix it... (instead of re-shot the picture) ;-)

the bubbles on the top, yea, i could remove them, thank you for the critique. i don't know why they're more dark, maybe because the fruit also reflect some light.? & yea, some drops are on the glass, next time i use a rug between the shots ;-)

well, i see, you have an eye to see every weakness on the picture. thank you very much for your fair critical comment, it really helps to improve the skills, that's why i'm here on dA.

greetings to norway from little switzerland

sorry but this is not an excuse :) if you cannot change the power of the flash, it is just about to move your flash closer/further away, as simple as that! you do not have to have same flashes..
dkraner's avatar
yea, i know it's not an excuse, but i can/could not move the flash further away because there's a wall :-(
lewicka's avatar
then point it to the wall, and reflect from the wall, if wall is not white then use white paper or tin foil :)
dkraner's avatar
that's a possibility ;-) i guess i solved the problem without buying a new external flash, thank you.

looks really awsome. especially these great looking reflection on the water surface and the heart shape bubble makes it stand out. :)
how did u do the lighting without creating reflections on the glass?
dkraner's avatar
well, that's a good question... i use two different external flashes from the side. the camera-flash is unused ;-)
ach, ich sah soeben, dass wir eig. ja nachbarn sind eddy, grüsse nach deutschland :P

dkraner's avatar
oh, the bubbles, they have been there... i did throw the orange into the water, thats all ;-) (i guess, they could not leak for 1 second)

I haven't seen them hanging out in the little heart shape before. Great capture! I love your fruit heart shots.
