I think thats pretty cool, what program did you use for this? was it still maya, but with a different rendering option?

next semester, i plan on learning more about using maya/lightwave...

Anyways, i like your other renderings and things too! well.... bye bye... haha.

i think it would be cool to see an animation of this using physics. like, have them hitting eacvhother and swinging. but even without the animation, its neat. =)

that looks good, something different for a change in ur gallery... i think u should do more of this kind of renders, its less about makig it look real and more about making it look artistic, not that the rest isnt artistic, but this is different :)

Me again.

Okay, too lazy to read the rest of the posts (bad deviant...is that redundant?), but is this Maya's built in cel shader or something custom? I'm looking for a shader to approximate watercolor (well, more like japanese sumi ink) but the one I got is booty... it acts very weird on geometry that's built the "splinecage" way as opposed to nurbs and simple polys.


Yah, so any suggestions?

way i did it is used a maya ramp shader, then rendered in mental ray with mental ray contours to get the outlines

I've done cell-shading in 3DSMax, it's incredibly simple in 3DSMax, how you did that with Mental Ray is the impressive thing.

Teach me!!! I think I need to study some My-uh this year! I hadn't idea this could be done within Maya... Is it more easier than Swift 3d work?

haha, swift3d actually comes with maya installed as an optional renderer!

but i didnt use that, i used a much more complicated mental ray shader system, its much more flexible

also i jsut used that for the outlines, i used mayas shaders for the actual toon objects

I'm waaay behind this new (new to me!) things... But I think I understand what you're saying. I'll have to set up my computer for such things this summer. I want to do some toons and some projects for my real art work.

How long does it take to do something like this? Do you have to tell it where to put the shadows... like each individual shadow or is it an effect?

i jsut make one light, everything in that light will cast a shadow (if i tell it to)

in this scene i only needed one light, which comes from infinity and faces to the lower right

well i wish i knew most the people on dA in real life that wanted to know how to do what i do, cause its so much easier than it looks, i could litterally give a little 30 minute demonstration and people could do what i do

ill be graduating in a couple months.... even though i couldashoulda finished 2 years ago.

when you graduate, if you get bored, your gonna need some ind of hobby to take up all that time. ive been living the 'do-nothing' life for about 4 years now, and trust me you always need something to do or youll go crazy.

if for whatever reason you feel the need to learn how to use maya and do 3d animation and graphics stuff, im the guy to ask ;)

naw, the contour glitch isnt noticeable if you use black contours, only if they are anything but black.... i really wanted to use gold contours on the locks but i couldnt :( oh well though still looks ok
