Masaharu and Yukihisa, two ronin from very different backgrounds, have come to Edo during the Kan’ei famine in search of a better life: Masaharu because he left his previous employment after being injured trying (and failing) to break up a fight between his superiors, and Yukihisa, the son of an impoverished ronin, because he has nowhere to go after his father’s death.
