Okita Soji

Both Shinsengumi-Archives and I have been playing with photos over the past year to come up with a couple of examples of what Okita Soji might have looked like in real life since there are no surviving photos that identify him by name. (There are some possible photos, but nothing concrete.)

Recently, I used some photos of Soji’s family members to play with an AI program to come up with … well, not quite a composite … more like an approximation based on family resemblance.

I used three photos to generate an AI portrait on which this drawing is bases: one of Miyahara Kyugoro, Soji’s uncle (his mother’s brother), one is Okita Mitsu, Soji’s sister, and one of Okita Kaname, Mitsu’s grandson (Soji’s great-nephew).
