Description
I was asked to draw a portrait of Okada Izo that shows a family resemblance to the photo of his nephew, Okada Torasuke, the oldest son of Izo's brother, Keikichi.
Okada Izo was a swordsman from Tosa domain who is known as one of the four "Hitokiri" (manslayers) of the Bakumatsu era. Izo led out political murders on the orders of his teacher, Takechi Hanpeita, who misused Izo's loyalty and naiveté for his own means. Izo was arrested, tortured for information about his comrades in the Tosa Loyalist Party, and beheaded.
