Red Winged Octopus by dippydude Red Winged Octopus by dippydude
My buddy from Detroit was telling me about how Detroit dresses up a purple octopus mascot in a Red Wings jersey... I don't understand it, but he wanted a tattoo of it...
This concept is inline with that idea :)

Love it! The octopus tradition came about because back in the day, it took 8 wins to win the Stanley cup. In 1952, two Detroit store owners threw and octopus on the ice, with the 8 legs representing 8 wins. The Wings swept the series that year, so the octopus became a good luck charm and a tradition.

AWESOME! Thanks so much.
Do they still throw out a live octopus every year or did PETA have something to say about that?

Oh it's not live! People get them from seafood stores already dead. Technically, it's against NHL policy to throw things on the ice, so people boil them (to get rid of most of the smell) then sneak them in by taping them to the body. They usually are thrown on the ice during big games and only when the puck is not in play.

Haha, that's pretty awesome. I'm glad they boil them... I'd hate to sit next to the guy strapped with a dead octopus smell the whole game, haha.
