It’s been a while since I talked about flight in dinosaurs, and discussions on it go increasingly polarizing on whereas it was developed once and lost multiple times or if birds are just one product of many flight developments. I myself find easily swooned by either argument, so here’s something less controversial. In Modelling the Flying Bird, C.J. Pennycuick proposes that the patagia seen in modern birds are the remnants of a full bat-like wing that degenerated over time. This would make the ancestral flying dinosaurs more in line with other flying and gliding vertebrates that usually start with patagia, only to be an unique case where the patagia is replaced by another airfoil. This hypothesis is perhaps vindicated in the discovery of membranous winged scansoriopterygids, which depending on the study are either basal avialans, basal oviraptorosaurs or ancestral maniraptors, putting them in a basal position in relation to dinosaurs with feathered wings. How did pterosaurs swim?

Pterosaurs swim tracks shows that pterosaurs could swim, much like every other tetrapod. These tracks suggest that the hindlimbs were used for propulsion, and it explains the presence of large feet in ctenochasmatoids. However, not all pterosaurs had large hindfeet. Pteranodontians, for example, tend towards small feet and front heavy bodies. This suggests that the forelimbs were the primary propulsion organs. Thus comes a question: did these pterosaurs flap their wings like modern auks and similar birds, or did they move their limbs like terrestrial tetrapods like dogs? Swimming bats flap their wings in the water, but whereas they’re good models for pterosaurs remains to be seen. Most bats are poor walkers, and the clades that walk well like vampire bats and mystacines have not been studied in an aquatic setting. Hopefully further tracks can remedy this mystery.

The sun slowly rose into the sky and gave monkey puzzle trees the light that they need to keep on growing and producing leaves. It was not just the trees getting the light either, a running stream on a hillside was now getting exposure as well. Sunlight even poked through the clouds and behind a mountain landslide along with shining through more trees. A prehistoric damselfly flew up to what appeared to be a tree trunk and landed on its side before flying to another close by. However a twitchy movement from the tree caused the damselfly to fly off. These were actually the legs of an Alamosaurus that walked over to join three others of its kind at a lush lake basin with another on land and two more bathing in the water with one of them lowering its long neck to drink. Sunlight poked through the clouds and behind a mountain landslide shining through the trees. At the edge of a forest and standing in front of a tree a Therizinosaurus browsed the higher leaves using its long neck to reach up there and grabbed large mouthfuls with its strong beaked mouth. Were a predator to be nearby the dinosaur would use its clawed hands to strike devastating blows and leave potentially lethal injuries. But nothing threatening was in sight and it moved on to another tree. A young Alamosaurus lumbered across the open searching around for any point of interest and spotted a large tree not too far away already being feasted on by another Alamosaurus that was older and much larger that still allowed it to share the food. Jurassic June 27- Fan Extended JWD Prologue V2

In a swampy area, there were all kinds of creatures going about there. Flying around over the water were primitive damselflies searching for prey but had no such luck. Some went right up to a Spinosaurus that waded in the water fishing that took no issue with the flying insects. One of them flew over to a tree and was snatched by a Purgatorius climbing on a branch that ate it. Coming out of the forest was a Pyroraptor making its way over to the water for something aquatic to eat. The dinosaur stared down intently waiting for something to come by for it to strike. As it waited it did see a freshwater ray but that proved to be too far away to for the predator. Up ahead it did notice a Microraptor flying towards the water with its claws reached out as it thrust them into the water and pulled out a prehistoric lungfish.
