Compsognathidae The Compsognathidae is a family group of coelurosaurian theropod dinosaurs within the Maniraptoromorpha clade. This group consists of small carnivorous theropods with generally conservative forms that lived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Were alvarezsaurids egg-eaters?

Alvarezsaurids are highly unusual dinosaurs in that they have short but powerful forelimbs with thick claws. Typically they are interpreted as analogous to modern anteaters and similar mammals, using their claws to dig for termites and ants. However, a 2025 paper on the newly discovered Manipulonyx, a taxa with odd carpal spikes, have noted that the forelimbs are too short to reach termite mounds. Instead, these animals are interpreted as egg eaters, using the forelimbs to grab and pierce dinosaur egg shells. While an interesting hypothesis, I feel it has its own share of problems. If alvarezsaurid arms are two short to reach termite mounds, they surely are also too small to reach eggs, as most dinosaurs (including some Mesozoic birds) burried their eggs on the ground. I also question the ecology of an obligate egg-eater; there are modern snakes of the genus Dasypeltis and Elaschistodon that do feed primarily on eggs, but they're cold blooded animals. Dromaeosaurs on air (again)

I've previously written extensively about the flight capacities of dromaeosaurs. I also posited on the role of hindwings in early paravians. Recently, a study seems to have vindicated me in some areas and forced me to reconsider. This study showcases the trackways of what might possibly be a microraptorine, which are widely spaced. If taken to be normal footprints, it would indicate a land speed superior to that of cheetahs. So the people behind this paper proposed a more logical solution: that the trackways were made by an animal occasionally taking flight and landing, like wing assisted jumps. This solidifies aerial behaviour in some non-bird theropods as well as indicate that the microraptorines not only could take off from the ground but that their hindwings likely contributed to this wing-assisted means of running. As always, new discoveries show that dinosaur flight predates birds and that it was present in a variety of behaviours with no clear modern analogue.

What if birds were originally bats?

It’s been a while since I talked about flight in dinosaurs, and discussions on it go increasingly polarizing on whereas it was developed once and lost multiple times or if birds are just one product of many flight developments. I myself find easily swooned by either argument, so here’s something less controversial. In Modelling the Flying Bird, C.J. Pennycuick proposes that the patagia seen in modern birds are the remnants of a full bat-like wing that degenerated over time. This would make the ancestral flying dinosaurs more in line with other flying and gliding vertebrates that usually start with patagia, only to be an unique case where the patagia is replaced by another airfoil. This hypothesis is perhaps vindicated in the discovery of membranous winged scansoriopterygids, which depending on the study are either basal avialans, basal oviraptorosaurs or ancestral maniraptors, putting them in a basal position in relation to dinosaurs with feathered wings.
