Katipunan - The First Supremo : Deodato Arellano

Contrary to popular belief, Andres Bonifacio—though undoubtedly one of the more prominent founders of the Katipunan—was not its first Supremo or the President of the Supreme Council. On July 15, 1892, the members of the Supreme Council were Deodato Arellano (Supremo), Bonifacio (Comptroller), Ladislao Diwa (Fiscal), Teodoro Plata (Secretary), and Valentin Diaz (Treasurer).

Katipunan - Jose Rizal Banishment

From the start, the Katipunan drew inspiration from Jose Rizal, whose nationalist writings stirred an oppressed nation into action. His two novels, the Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not) and the El Filibusterismo (The Subversive), denounced the decadent colonial order presided by the incompetent and abusive colonial officials and the backward and immoral frailocracy. In the 1880s, Jose Rizal and his fellow ilustrados launched the Propaganda Movement in Europe where they vigorously campaigned for the implementation of the much needed reforms in the Philippines. Their failure to force Spain to institute reforms convinced the Katipunan that the call must be for revolution and not reform.

Fort San Pedro

Fuerte de San Pedro
is a military defence structure in Cebu (Philippines), built by the Spanish under the command of Miguel López de Legazpi, first governor of the Captaincy General of the Philippines. It is located in the area now called Plaza Indepedencia, in the pier area of the city. The original fort was made of wood and built after the arrival of Legazpi and his expedition. In the early 17th century a stone fort was built to repel Muslim raiders. Today's structure dates from 1738 and is the oldest triangular bastion fort in the country. It served as the nucleus of the first Spanish settlement in the Philippines. During the Philippine Revolution at the end of the 19th century, it was attacked and taken by Filipino revolutionaries, who used it as astronghold.

This page just makes me scream for Simoun X Elias :iconfangirlingplz: its like Ilyas has given Kanlaon new hope :iconsparklingplz: this pair shall be one of my OTPs, next to AnIsa (Ankar x Isabella)

Another theory for Kanlaon: Like Ibarra, he was betrayed, wasnt he? The Hiligaynon people mustve surrendered him to the Spanish perhaps? Although I could not speculate a reason why they would do that...perhaps the Spanish spread the rumours that he is a monster?
Or perhaps he was one of those remaining that tried to fight off the Spanish, but failed and was imprisoned? So, the hiligaynon people sought help from Mindanao; thus, leading to Ilyas rescuing Kanlaon?

Ilyas...hmmm...he is very strange. Because of this page, it seems that Ilyas isnt a Naga, more like a guardian or helper of the Nagas (well, considering he comes from a clan with supernatural abilities, its possible). Its either his elders trusted him to rescue Kanlaon because of his ability OR Ilyas snuck on his own perhaps. Nevertheless, Ilyas shows such an outstanding loyalty to Kanlaon - he started being Kanlaon's companion ever since he was a child... he is so much like Elias XD I would like to see more of their history

Kanlaon, you wont leave Ilyas right? You wont let Ilyas end up like Elias in Noli right? Right? Right?

Trivia: The reason why Rizal was executed is because the Katipunan used his name and image to gather members. Rizal had no idea that the Katipunan was making him do "treason" (which in this case, he wasnt, really. Rizal had no idea that this was happening). Because of this findings, and the controversial books, the government (the previous governor-general, i think, believed Rizal was innocent, but, he finished his term before making a sentence, and was replaced with a new one who sentenced Rizal with death.) concluded that Rizal was against the spanish empire, imprisoned and executed.
Ill find the article which i read this from. My histoey prof explained this to us, which really shocked us XD

Excited for the next update (and the continuation of the backstory :3 )

Many thanks for the theory EternalEmpress, I always delighted to read your theories. Unfortunately I can't spoil further for Kan-Laon, if you are interested to find out more, look up the other comments on the pages ;)

There is more than meets the eyes on Ilyas, just like Elias from Noli.
Look up on his clothes that he wore when he was a child in the flashback, isn't it a bit too nice for a mere pirate? ^^ as well as his surname.. does it ring a bell?

Ilyas has his reasons to rescue Kan-Laon, just like how Elias & Ibarra relationships in Noli.

I see.. I would love to learn more about the circumstances to Rizal execution. Since previously Rizal was allowed to go to Cuba as a doctor after his detainment in Dapitan, then suddenly he was arrested in Spain and sent back to Philippines. Very weird..

Then I shall wait XD You know what they say, patience is a virtue :iconsitplz: Although, it would stop the theories from coming out XD

(Why do I have this strange feeling that Ilyas has (a) Naga eyes like Kanlaon, which may convinced Kanlaon to trust Ilyas when Ilyas rescued him (b) only one eye because he was injured while rescuing Ilyas - which I hope not (c) is blind.)
Now that you mention it...

:iconohmygodplz:HE'S A PRINCE, ISN'T HE?!!!!
Deducing from his surname, he's
(1) a descendant of Rajah Sulayman III of the Kingdom of Maynila or Tarik Sulayman of the Macabebe tribe of Pampanga. After the Battle of Bangkusay, the family of Rajah Sulayman III or Tarik Sulayman fled, possibly to Mindanao while stopping over some islands to rest and/or gather more supporters. At Lanao, they intermingled with the Maranao tribe, perhaps?
(But, it would be impractical for a family from Pampanga or Maynila to travel to the far ends of Mindanao, unless they have relatives there...)

(2) He is probably a decendant of Sulayman of the Mantapuli kingdom (probably his family gave themselves the last name of Sulayman, so the people would know they are the descendants of the great prince who killed three out of four beasts that were wrecking havoc in Mindanao). According to the epic, Mantapuli lies west of Mindanao, which means, Ilyas is not from Mindanao but from either Indonesia or Malaysia.
(But, this would contradict the fact that Ilyas has the blood of the Lanao tribe... Unless, he hails from the Indarapatra's line, who never returned to Mantapuli but instead stayed in Mindanao. There could be a point in time where Indarapatra's line adopted the surname "Sulayman" as a homage for his brother).

Hmmm... Knowing Elias from Noli, Ilyas must've rescued Kanlaon in order to help him regain what was once the Philippines that belongs to the Filipinos (as Ibarra is the hope of the Filipinos because he wanted to give education, Kanlaon is the hope of the Filipinos since he is the Naga of Visayas (or Hiligaynon), the sole remaining symbols of pre-colonial Philippines0. However, what if Kanlaon did give up on the Filipinos? :iconheplz:
(Then again, if my theory is correct that it was Ilyas who gave Kanlaon new hope, it is possible that Kanlaon will help Ilyas, as a token of gratitude. :iconsobeautifulplz: )

If you want, I can give you scanlated pages of books and articles about Rizal and possibly the Spanish colonial Philippines :)

Oh Simoun..... that was a heavy backstory it kinda make me think like he's this guy's-->[Icon] Break Xerxes  version of Nagaraja. Break is kinda funny in some way but he knows when things are getting serious. He also has a bad history in his life. I bet when Isabella sees him, she'll go fangirling asking him tons of questions and Simoun will be like: screw this woman! She doesn't know sh*t at all!
but will be like a big brother to her(after both of them are Filipinos and fellow nagas and all)... if she stops pestering him about precolonial and stuff....

I don't know about this....... Kan-laon going to Indonesia with Isabellla.... it reeks with anxiety and disturbance in the air. I mean, I read through the comments and Sensei said ''He will foil with Isabella's...stuff'' something about that in the corner. does that mean Simoun will dislike Isabella? that my 'Simoun to Isabella be like: Come my *Manghud! your *Kamaguwangang igsu-on will protect you!Pikachu Glomp ' will not happen???? ;w; )

why is it that I'm seeing terrible clouds between this two's relationship? tell me I'm wrong Sensei!!! that they will have a brother-sister relationship and it's glorious!!!!!Save me from the thoughts of this dark clouds!!!TT-TT)

manghud- little sister/ little brother (depends on the gender of the younger sibling)
kamaguwangang igsu-on- Bid brother/Big sister (depends on the gender of the elder sibling)
I'm from bohol so... yeah :D

Isabella will definitely goes fangirling if she knows Simoun is has lived through Precolonial Era.
No doubt she will interrogate him... non-stop... :iconheplz:

There will be character developments thus Isabella and Simoun will grew. There will be conflict, yes, but that conflict will make them understand each other. Besides I'm the type of author that loves reconciling family members type of story. However the reconciliation will be a very long road ahead, ^^

Unfortunately Simoun has a lot of baggage from his more than 300 years of existence.

Dialeknya saja agak berbeza.

What!? Simoun's going to Indonesia! Eh, what is he going to do there ?
So Elias found him O w O I wonder if Simoun was being over protective of Elias back then whenElias was still a child, or maybe Elias was the over protective one xD thank goodness Simoun was alright xc he's already hurt and now they called him a demon Naga ; ^ ;
And also I found out that not only the pirates came from Mindanao there are also some pirates living in Visayas(I don't know if there are pirates in Luzon tho) o v o
Which are my ancestors by th way ; v ; some of the Waray people are pirates and raided and attack somewhere in Cebu, Bohol, Bool, in some parts in Luzon and in Mindanao that's why the people here in my place are quite greedy//shot

OH OOOOOOHH!!!  ( /)O3O(\)

So Simoun is a Naga! ...From Visayas, right?

---

I imagine that the "Captain" being sympathetic with both Filipino Nagas.

I imagine that when he first came to Makassar/Indonesia, it probably shocked the residental Naga when they found he's a Rainbow Serpent due to how isolated Australia is and the sacredness of the Serpent or that they're not aware of another kind of "Nagas"...ish. XP
Being so faraway from his home clan, it did worry him that he would lose his connection with his land and people but is reassured that as long as he remembers his Dreaming and Song, he will carry his own part of country and Dreamtime wherever he goes no matter how far. :)

It's likely that the "Captain" is very aware about what's happening in Australia and with his fellow clans in present-day Northern Territory. Around this point of when Nagaraja takes place, all contact between Makassar and Australia would have been cut completely and probably did depressed the "Captain".

The area around the Top End especially in the regions of Darwin is one of the last places where European established settlements in Australia. Darwin being established in 1869, around the same time when Makassar contact ceased. Although subjected with the same institutional racist system of "reserves" by Europeans and the "Stolen Generation", because of its isolation and how late European settlements were established, a lot of Aboriginal communities in Armhen Land were about to continue and preserve much of their traditions and beliefs from European "interventation" than many of their more southern counterparts. Especially those outside of the Northern Territory.

The first time Captain went to Indonesia, the locals Bissu priest in Makassar were scared his departure will create imbalance in Yolngu's land. Plus he has one of the oldest Naga around, so everybody (including local Indonesian Nagas) respects and in awe with him ^^ hahaha, even Ankar is very respectful to him since the Captain marry his cousin, the Makassar princess XDD so Ankar should call him Elder brother now?

There was a reason the Captain come long with Ankar and co to Philippines, Manila use to be a stop-over for Yolngu-Makassar sailors who are on a voyage to China to sell smoked Teripangs.
Smoked teripangs can fetch a high price in China and the Captain will use these revenues to fund and support the Yolngu people to buy metals, knifes, etc. He will return to Australia (secretly) during wet season Monsoon winds.

Yolgnu and other Australia indigenous resilience to colonization in the Northern Territory, beside of their isolation, is in part to their connection to the whole Asia trade, they already have a strong sense of identity since many young Yolngu already travels abroad (as a rite of passage) together with Makassan ships. These Yolngu were more broad minded due to their travels and much less 'impressed' by the colonizers civilization.

One of the similarities between Australia and Philippines is that during colonization era, the natives in both countries are effectively cut off from trade from the rest of Asia. Philippines used to be a trade hub between China and Maritime Asean, while Australia export commodity : smoked trepangs, fund the Yolngu people to buy metals, knifes, etc which can be traded with other Australian Indigenous Nations products like boomerangs, etc. Their view on their identity was shaped by the colonizers. Thus Captain will be sympathetic to Philippines Nagas plight.

The Captain is the silent type but he likes to lecture his youngsters if they do anything silly (read : Edo & Ankar) XDDD

eh, there will be a Maori character and a British characters with Surname Wallace and Brooke.
I haven't considered additional Australian characters since I'm prioritizing to Philippines & Indonesian Nagas at the moment.

...Also has the "Princess" seen the "Captain"'s Serpent form before?

(At some point, if the Captain does go into his Serpent form, he could swim through the sea in incredible speed after targeted victims people in their boats and comes from beneath jumps up and swallow them whole in one bite, swims back to the ship, spits the people out from his mouth before transforming back to his human form. Remarking how he wasn't hungry...yet. And that's why kids you should never anger your elders. Because Rainbow Serpents like to eat things whole but sometimes spit their food out when they're not actually hungry. XP

I really want to see that happen. (OWO) )

eh, it depends on their batin power XDDD hahaha, no seriously.

During the 17th century, Gowa Kingdom was attacked by the Dutch. The fleeing royals seeks asylum in Kutai and other Asian countries like Singapore and Malaysia.
Therefore, Ankar and the Makassar Princess are cousins. Ah but she's not a Naga, mind you, since not from the bloodline of Putri Karang Melenu Naga.
