Description
Ported to OBJ from the original SketchUp model by BorgMan (who calls it an airbus; air tram is the official name). Based on the original design created by Andrew Probert and as seen on screen in both filming miniature and full scale replica form for Star Trek: The Motion Picture (TMP). Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS. You can download BorgMan's original SketchUp model at the link below, although you'll have to port it yourself:
This was the very first new Federation craft of any kind seen in TMP, and was the late 23rd century equivalent of a flying passenger train. There's very little official Franchise information available on it, as it was intended purely as set and background dressing for the scene in TMP where Admiral Kirk arrives Starfleet Headquarters in San Fransisco to confer with Fleet Admiral Nogura concerning the V'ger Crisis. It had anti-grav generators to lift it off the ground and could do so to a respectable height even when fully loaded per the movie visuals, although its method of propulsion was never stated. This came in various lengths depending on the passenger capacity intended, with both short and long versions seen on screen (this is the long version), and there was apparently also provision for hooking up added passenger cars like a traditional train (never shown on screen). They normally operate between tram stations, although they are capable of landing anywhere with a suitable surface in an emergency or as required. It existed in both official and civilian versions, although only examples of Starfleet-owned versions are seen on screen in TMP. This was a human design that originated late in the TOS/TAS era and proved very robust for its purpose, so much that both examples of the original design and later air trams based on it used on other worlds are seen on screen in later Franchise productions (DS9 "Honor Among Thieves," VOY "Non Sequitur").
Although technically not a spacecraft, I'm including an entry for it here at Mandel's given that it's capable of atmospheric flight and for those who were wondering if there was a CG model of this out there. This excellent CG recreation of the long version comes with both a full interior and side doors that can be rigged (!), although I had lots of fun porting it due to its high poly count. I got it ported to the common OBJ format though, as you can see above, which means you can do the same too. Happy porting fun!

For non-profit, non-commercial use only. If you use this in any of your projects, please credit BorgMan for his original CG recreation. Thank you.
ASIDE - I'm guessing the short version is the Mark I model, but that's just as guess. BTW, here's an image link to a picture of the actual filming model for the short version (Air Tram 3 in TMP) of the Federation air tram:

Yeah, I never did like the "tram" designation. It's a single unit, and in my mind modern trams are multiple units. That's why I called it an Airbus.
It's totally not that I could've sworn that was the name ;-)
