Gonna be completely honest here, in the past few months I have had several cases of character thefts or people being "heavily inspired" by my characters, and I am getting really sick and tired of it.

Being inspired is one thing, but taking my character and changing a few things isn't called being inspired. Especially when you search up the character's species and find none of the other characters having the same looks as mine.

For example, IF my character is a certain species like a werewolf or a basilisk etc etc, I understand that those species have specific criteria and design that makes them what they are. Like you can't put a lizard head on a humanoid body and call it a werewolf. BUT if you search the same species and find that none of the other 999999 art of them have the same look or same particular design element that my character has, but yet yours have because you saw and took the idea from me, then we have a fucking problem.

I even have cases where the other person's "inspired" character had no business having what my character has. For example if you make a man in uniform, that's completely fine. I do not own nor claim to own the idea of a man-in-uniform character, but my boys still have design elements that were actually thought about. Like their hats have a glowing orb because the hat is also mechanical/a robot. If you made a man-in-uniform character and for some reason they have a glowing orb on their hat too, I'd raise an eyebrow. To my knowledge, no actual military hat has a glowing orb like that. Also the way I draw the hats is honestly wrong and not correct at all >__>, so it's really obvious if someone is copying the whole "wrong anatomy" of the hat and plus, the totally out-of-place glowing orb.

And the same above case also had some biography theft. It is obvious they just copy-pasta some sentences from my written biography of my character and changed a few words to suit theirs. THIS ISN'T OKAY, ALL RIGHT?

Now I'm not saying "Oh wow I'm so original with the hat orb thing herpderp", but if you have that yet it doesn't make sense for the character to have it + the same wrong way I draw the hat, + biography theft, + style theft and basically your character sharing wayyy too many similar things because you were "inspired" then yes it is not something I will tolerate. I don't appreciate the laziness that people are basically taking my characters, only changing about 25% of things on them, and then somehow find that justice to call it a proper OC. Recolouring isn't counted as changing either. It just looks like a blue/green/red/neon coloured version of my OC.

I also had another case with someone going as far to even copy my character's markings. Like Rufus' 3 red stripes on his face as well as the weird tubes on his neck. Why?? There's so many other more better and interesting markings and patterns.

I know I'm someone who hardly speaks a lot. I only put up a handful of journals within a whole year, and rarely they are personal things of mine. But it doesn't mean I will take shit lying down and just accept it. Right now I'm not singling anyone in particular out, I am talking about multiple cases which means it involves multiple people.

Tl;dr: Stop taking my stuff and call it your own. Stop being "heavily inspired" to the point it is just a rip-off. I will not hesitate to make a journal and notify others of the blatant OC-stealing if you refuse to settle it amicably with me. Please respect my work and my characters! Thank you!

yeah or what if you were role playing with someone who thinks that just because her character is the parent of all the offspring characters, it gives her the automatic right to take control of your characters and treat them as her own. You're not allowed to express yourself through character and genetic development, make your own choices or the changes you needed to and you're pretty much stuck with using character concepts you hate just to make that person happy. then you're expected to have every single offspring character be EXACTLY THE SAME as hers and they are not allowed to look and act like your characters at all. Not only that, they have to go through abusive education and training to become overpowering warrior monarchs in the future and they can't be anything else. If you try to change any of it, you're faced with explosive temper tantrums and demands to change it all back or else then the silent treatment until you give in and give her what she wants: Total control and ownership of your offspring characters. If you don't give her what she wants, she'll keep controlling, godmodding and changing your characters until you give up and quit the rpg altogether. that's when she'll steal your characters for herself and claim credit for your concepts and ideas. If you dare speak against it, you'll be faced with stalking, harassment, and dramatic smear campaigns that could ruin your life, friendships and reputation as an artist. she is determined to destroy your image and existence on da at all costs until there's nothing of you left.... i lost so much to this person and i'm still struggling to undo the damage she's done to my other characters to this very day.

what about situations like that?

Something similar happens where I study when some classmates complete their essays: No bibliography, a lousy structure and all copy-paste.
It is right to be upset, just do not consider this to be a novelty.
(That does not make the act any less bad)

Seriously? People can't write their own OC bios? They must've failed in their English lessons.
I know how you feel, writing a bio and designing an OC is similar to 9 month of pregnancy. (Excuse the bad joke)

Coming up with something unique is harder than ever these days, you got the copy cats and people starved of ideas.
It's hard to bring the thieves down since the Internet is more open than ever. You cut of one neck, they grow another.
If any of them lives locally, I wouldn't mind give them a knock on the door and ask them personally. :I

Some say the most sincere form of flattery is imitation. It's when they start monetizing your ideas when we start to have problems. Let us know when that happens and someone should get a legal team on it immediately. Incidentally, I'm not entirely sure how to copy right character designs and/or concepts. The pool to draw from is both illusive and downright difficult to get to, so I can see budding artists using your style as a sort of base board. Incidentally, when I have my company built, I can help you. Remind me, though. The pass code is Zeekyboogiedook (which, ironically, I stole from the most demented flash movie ever). Easy enough to remember and it should jog my memory.

This absolutely disgusts me... Especially for OCs. The laziness and even cruelty of people continues to amaze me...

My best wishes in eliminating this issue.

it's amazing how much people use stuff like that.  I've been inspired by other works i've read or drawings etc., but i usually make my own stuff.  I'd hate it if someone did that to me.  Especially if it's an OC.  If you're going to do something like that, at least get permission first.  Otherwise get some originality.

I opened RQs once for this idea, and someone literally copied to whole thing and changed a few words and opened RQs very similar.
I could tell that they did because this certain person (not saying their name) doesn't have good grammar, at least it's worse than mine.
It was a unique idea that I was thinking about. It isn't something that just comes into someone's mind.

But yeah, theft is so annoying. >n< And it isn't fair that people can take credit from your OCs when they changed maybe the color or add a marking to it.
I totally agree with you with this journal. c:

There's definitely a big line between "inspired/influenced" and downright theft/laziness. When it comes to people ripping off artists with unique styles and character designs as yours, it's PRETTY DAMN EASY to tell when it's happening, too. The sad thing is, it's really hard to be able to have actual punishment rendered in many cases such as these, even if it's easy to see that something's going on. DA has far too many people on this site and no where near enough mods to be able to sort things out, even if it's clear that any rules or terms of service are being broken, like blatant art theft (someone taking someone's picture, reposting it, and claiming it as their own). Saying someone stole a character design can be a very ambiguous claim, with someone screaming about how their design was "stolen", even if there were only very few things in common. Then again, there are those that are so in your face character thefts that it's downright painful.

I'm so sorry to hear that these problems keep swirling around you Digi. From character theft to people bitching about commission prices, it's a wonder you're still on DA. A beautiful wonder, please don't let that change. I've seen too many artists leave DA because too much bull is put on them and they just can't deal anymore. With big sites comes big problems, but also big, awesome people. Glad you're still here. :>

I'm guilty of character theft in some cases. I take characters other people have created and give them personalities of my own, and maybe change a thing or two about them. This made me feel really guilty about it, and I won't do it ever again.

When I was 13, I use to do that to but I never passed them off as my character. It would be for RP reasons and never would the character be reposted. It was before I could draw the way I do now... so yeah I wouldn't do it again either.

Biography theft, seriously? People, there's TONS of websites that can help you develop a character, ffs. There's no need to steal anyone else's.

This is obnoxious that you have to go through this, Digi 8/

Seen it happen, hate that it does happen, support you on this 100%. Also, hate it when they don't give credit where credit is due. This relates to what you say, in being inspired, and goes from there to have the person not say what they were inspired by, or who the artist is. Also, changing only 25% or a few parts of a character drawn by someone else and then naming it your own, does not count as an OC. It's like plagiarizing on a term paper or report that is handed in. Just Saying.

Please try to get someone like a lawyer. VonderDevil talked about doing that in a recent journal. It's not the easiest thing in the world to do, which is why I said please and try. Once dA realizes it's getting in trouble with the law, it'll start to stop.

Trying to get admins to do something about it won't work. Making journals like these are even less effective. Especially if people want to steal from others just to troll. There will be people like that.

This is absolutely horrid.  Is this not even possibly plagiarism, which is illegal? I hope DA finds these people and bans them.  No originality=wannabe talent, in my opinion.  This is what DA  is for:  Originality, talent and respectful feedback on someone's art.

I remember someone faving a pic of one of my characters on my old account, but then filing it under a folder that she'd named "My Characters". Other people had told her that no, those weren't her characters, but she acted like she didn't know what they were talking about. She got banned, in the end.

To be honest I do find a lot of inspiration from you, but I would never go as far as to steel any of your characters... I just really like the way you do the sharp jawlines and mouths, I think it looks really wicked and I will admit to trying to emulate it a little... i don't think I have ever had the problem of having any of my character designs stolen... But I know I would probably be very upset if it did happen (can't remeber who it was but I found a guy with a freakishly similar design to one of my characters... I ended up letting it go because I couldn't figure out which one of us was first and we where both really shocked at the similarities)
