I wish upon a firefly...

:bulletred::bulletorange::bulletyellow::bulletgreen::bulletblue: WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT RATS? :bulletblue::bulletgreen::bulletyellow::bulletorange::bulletred:
:star: READ MY F.A.Q. (handling, care, behavior, etc...)

Model : Arkanys

Shot with a Canon EOS 350D and Canon EF-S USM 60mm

I painted the butterfly using a wacom intuos4 A4 and Adobe Photoshop CS3

Oh and just before I get comments about this... I KNOW this is not how a firefly is supposed to look, I wanted to make something almost abstract / illustrative, no aim at a realistic firefly at all (this looks much more like a weird butterfly actually) ;)

EDIT : I repainted the tail and cut paw.

When I first caught sight of this piece, I was instantly mesmorized. I love how you've managed to integrate digital art with photography, and this has been achieved extremely well.

The use of the firey colour's on the butterfly/firefly has been detailed superbly and looking at it gives me a sense of warmth that I can almost hope is keeping little Arkanys warm in the darkened enviroment. The tendrils of light on the wings initially seemed to me as if the butterfly was actually falling towards Arkanys, but after taking several minutes to inspect it closely it looks more like the firefly is actually starting the desending part of beating its wings. I feel that the glowing affect around the bulb(?) of the firefly is magnificent, however the glow around the insect itself I feel is a bit weak, and this effect was what initially led me to believe that it was actually falling toward the little Rat.

The light affects on Arkanys himself has been done fantastically, however the light on the hid looks a bit too artificial. Overall however, the effect is mesmorising. The expression on the little one's face has been captured briliantly, and I can almost believe he is actually looking up on the little butterfly with unconcerned curiosity.

All in all, I believe that this piece would make an amazing wallpaper background for a desktop, or a brilliant little picture one could hang up on the wall of their house or have on display in a little frame. I can't quite bring up the words to describe how much this piece affects me, but I hope this "critique" is fair and does the work justice. I have tried to look at this piece harshly and see if I cannot offer some constructive advise, but so far I have failed - this piece is simply perfect as it is.
