Animated firefly by *DianePhotos. The suggester says, "I'm really fascinated by this work - it's quite simple, yet it seems amazingly surreal. It tells a story, - I can easily imagine the scene as one of the esential scenes in a fairytale, but it's very inspiring, too." Also suggested by ig0706.

Animated firefly and Arkanys

:bulletred::bulletorange::bulletyellow::bulletgreen::bulletblue: WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT RATS? :bulletblue::bulletgreen::bulletyellow::bulletorange::bulletred:
:star: READ MY F.A.Q. (handling, care, behavior, etc...)

:bulletred: WHY THIS ? :bulletred:

I needed something animated for my signature but it ended being too big... I'm also practising animation (this is my very first time animating something other than a blinky eye) for a music video project.

:bulletred: TECHNICAL STUFF :bulletred:

Photoshop CS3
16 frames
Everything has been painted except for the rat which is one of my own photographs.

:bulletred: MISCELLANEOUS :bulletred:

For the ones who'd be wondering, that's basically the way a butterfly moves : it's abdomen goes up as wings are flapping down, I watched some slow motion videos of butterflies today ;)

And YES, I KNOW this isn't how a firefly is supposed to look but it sounded better than "fire-butterfly" to me (as written in the description of my original artwork linked above) ;)

By the way, Arkanys is a RAT, not a mouse ;)

I love this animation so much. It's very original, and isnt some casual thing you see on DeviantArt every day. I love how the rat is staring at the firefly in some sort of amazement. I love how you understood light, and made it shine in the rat's eyes. That's cool, most wouldn't remember to do that!

Yet the staring of the rat is a tad bit awkward. He/she has no movement whatsoever, which makes it look as if its a purchased house decoration. The firefly just flails its wings in the exact same position over and over, which isn't terrible for a small animation like this one, but it could've had just a few more frames.

The only other thing I must add is, at one point, the wing flapping looks like you skipped a frame. I'm not smart enough to know the exact frame, but its not tbat big of a deal anyways. I guess I can say its when the wing is spread out, and not in front of the rat... Just watch closely and you should see the part I'm talking about

Nevertheless, I adore this animation! Keep it up!

I find this picture lovely, really really lovely indeed. I can picture the rat being the fireflies friend, and when the rat is in need, the firefly is there to give it light and guide to it's destination.
I love how the light flicker's on and off it's eye's and nose, but you could have added a blinking action to the rat, because it look's like a zombie some how, but other than all that, I really do love this, it is one of the most inspirational pictures I've looked at.
This show's that rat's should be treated as any other house pet, because of all the trash they are treated like, they need more love and inspiration, I am a rat owner myself, and I say, "Great job, it show's that even rats can be wonderful."

Fisrt off, before I go all technical, let me say this: very impressive! The firefly itself is very beautiful, especially the wings, and the lighting is simply fantastic.

On to the critical stuff.

The first thing that caught my eye was the lighting on the firefly's tail when his wings reach the bottom of the cycle. When his tail goes up while his wings are down, the light makes it look as though he's being sucked into a vacuum cleaner. Also, his tail seems to expand a bit at that same part.

On frame 13 (this is just a little thing, but it sticks out) the long part at end of the wing closest to us flies off the path of action, so it seems to "jump" at that point, which unfortunately takes the realism out of that part of the wing.

Now, I know you said you watched some slow-motion videos of a butterfly, but again when the wings reach the bottom of their cycle, his body looks as though it elongates, and his tail seems to gain a bit more width. So on frame 9, when his body is bent backwards, he looks as though he stretched out a bit. Perhaps it's just a bit too much "jump back" on him.

The only other thing, also on frame 9, is his antenna. The far one is perfect, but the one closest to us "pops". When it's fully bent, it looks out of place. Again, perhaps it is just a little too far back.

I think that if the firefly's position on frame 9 was moved forward just a bit, it would solve those problems, and repositioning the long tail on the wing on frame 13 would really make this little guy come to life (not that he isn't already, but even more so).

All in all, fantastic work. Just a couple little things that could be ironed out.

Congrats on your first animation! (other than a blinking eye )

Wow, what CAN'T I say about this, it's awesome. The light off the rats face along with the focus blur animation makes the rat 3 dimensional, with the orange light pulsing on it, its quite a sight to see. But then I see the what I will call "flying glow worm" and it leaves me in awe. The detail in the wings are amazing as well as the detail of its body. Excellently animated and having wonderful 3 dimensional animation, I could stare at this mesmerizing picture for hours. Even the shine on the eye, the whole animation makes me believe that there is really a light source moving and illuminating the rat from different distances, well made and amazing job. Really impressing and definitely worthy of a Daily Deviation.
