so which one should we read first?
12 Things to Remember is the first one I made. It is the origin story. Cohesion is the second as we get to know everyone a little better, Flight is the 3rd when things get meaty. They build up in complexity and yet they each can be read separately as stand alone pieces. Most children's book series are like that. Thanks for asking!
how did you get to this idea of elemental horses?
I used to draw a great deal in elementary school, especially horses and liked looking at carousel horses and those figurines they used to sell on tv. I wanted to design my own carousel horses. My sister's kindergarden teacher saw the drawing of the fire themed carousel horse when I was waiting for my ride home in 6th grade. I named it FireBright. It was when I was in 7th grade, that teacher contacted me, asking me to illustrate a children's book she wrote based on that drawing. I made several drawings for the book, she had it sent to a publisher, but they did not want my drawings. They wanted to have someone else illustrate that story so nothing really came to be. On my own I continued to practice drawing horses, kept designing my own carousels for a while. It was back in 2012 that I decided to give it another shot. I decided to pair them up with Chinese words and themes this time. I wanted to create something that bridges the two parts of my cultural identity. The story grew out of the decision to bind the 12 carousel horses into an art book. suggested indie online publishers, I ended up with LULU and decided to go all out with it. It just grew and grew and I figured I should at least make 3 books out of them.
