...that's right, I'm doing NaNoWriMo this year, already ranked in 1,216 words. For the past five years I've been actively spreading NaNo awareness via my websites, news articles etc, but I haven't been able to do it myself because of cognitive problems. But as you know, I got that problem mostly solved at the beginning of this year. I've had my novel idea brewing for about a year now, during which it has changed from scifi to literary fiction with some slight scifi elements. It's going to be my first new novel in over six years. My latest two were both written in two months, respectively, which makes me confident that I can pull through.

I'm going to have two particular challenges, however. Being sick, of course - if I sleep less than 10 hours I may not be at all functional, and stress tends to wreck my sleep. I'm also going to write in Finnish, because I really aim to get this novel published. Finnish is a very different language from English, resulting in much fewer words. My past four novel manuscripts have been about 35k words, which would translate to about 50k words in English, but now I have to write a novel almost 50% longer than anything I've written before!

Life has been pretty good lately, including work. I'm still far from a decent income, but I'm confident I'll get that part sorted out soon. At least I get to what I really enjoy. It's been nice writing for Suite101. I've got four editor's choice awards so far, one of which went to my NaNo article and one for the review of A Life Transparent, alienhead's fantastic novel. I also got a job at a Finnish music magazine. I've never written music reviews before, but it's a great exercise in style and vocabulary. I also got to interview Patrick Codenys of Front 242, probably the highest point of my eight-year career as a journalist, not just because Front 242 is insanely famous (and a band I really like), but because he was a very interesting person. The interview should be out in November, but it will be in Finnish, sorry.

I've been doing some other writing jobs too. I got some freelance translation/copywriting work from a British company, which I quite enjoyed. It made me realize I wouldn't mind being a copywriter. It's a job not so dissimilar from writing poetry, because in both every single word is extremely important and you have to evoke a certain emotional response in the reader. I was offered an amazing medical writing job by a Finnish company, but I haven't heard back from them after my response, which makes me wonder. I also applied for another great medical writing job, which would involve neuropharmacology, my specialty, but I don't know if I'll get that one. I do believe that sooner or later I'll latch on the real gem, which is a match for my skills and knowledge.

In December I will be self-publishing my first novel (my first novel to be published in any fashion, though it's the fourth manuscript I've written). It was written back in 2002, but I dug it up in the summer and edited it for several months. It's called Atlaskehrääjä (The Atlas Moth) and features cover art by the awesome Shurakai-Zero. I'm still undecided whether there will be an English version. December will be a busy month in general, including my boyfriend's graduation if all goes well. I get to bake loads in December and late November and baking is what I like the most, besides writing. :->

Last weekend I visited Altparty, which was the best demoparty I've ever been to (out of the 30 or so). There were fantastic live shows, including the first ever gig in Finland by Front 242. Loads of other great stuff, too, and many friends I hadn't seen for years. There was an art exhibition, which featured ASCII art and a painting of mine (neither of which are yet on DA, but will probably be some day). I was in really good and interesting company there: the other pieces included everything from comics to video installations and from textile art to radioactive Pong. I also did pretty well in the compos: I placed #2 in the Romantic graphics compo and won the technology video compo with my ASCII animated short film, yielding me a bunch of hardware.

Now, I just have to write 50,000 words in the next 30 days ...and get through the Finnish winter, urgh. With luck I could be relocating away from this hellhole in the near future, but the recession stuff may complicate it.

Wish you all the best, and a lot of good tea and cookies to overcome this weather :)

Thanks. These raspberry chocolate cookies might be the best I've made so far and I have a cupboard full of great tea. :-> Sadly my body has already feel the effects of the winter, but I'm trying to figure out ways to combat it.

I've decided to finally actually start studying Dutch in January, which should keep me more focused in hopefully getting permanently out of here as soon as possible. It might even be doable next year, but I try not to be too hopeful as not to be too disappointed.

Hey I'm in on NaNoWriMo too this year! First time ever. Pity I wont be able to read yours though, or the one you'll be publishing soon. Finnish is, I'm sad to admit, not my forte.

Wait, we don't have to be in the same region or something to be buddies or? I'm only a member of the Swedish one so far. What is your nick, maybe I can try and find you too?

No. I don't have any buddies in my home region, but the author search seems to have stopped working (before NaNo started you could search for someone's nickname). I'm not sure if I can add you without knowing your full profile URL. Mine is [link]

Hope you're doing well with your project. Many of my friends are waiting much more than their daily goals, but I haven't got much sleep for the last two weeks and have only been able to meet the minimum requirements (I also have to constantly do a lot of research, s I didn't have the time to do all of it before November). Finnish is starting to get annoying. :-P

I've added you so you should be able to add me via your user page now. :) Here's my [link] in case that doesn't work for some reason.

Doing well is not what I would call it right now. I'm way below par but I'm starting to pick up speed now. I'm just not used to disciplining myself to write every day, or keeping myself from going back and correcting all the time. Just today I got some ideas that I think might help later on in my story at least.
Pity about your sleep. Hope you will be able to get enough rest.

Djoseph. Same as here. :)
I haven't written much yet, and it doesn't seem to be possible to update my word count. At least I can't. =P
