Amolerouth in ASCII by diamondie Amolerouth in ASCII by diamondie
When exchanging comments about the Inspirations contest, I found out that our dear helpdesk admin +amolerouth is a fan of ASCII art. That gave me the idea of asciifying her dragon character with the wiffle bat (which you can see in her avatar and Deviant ID). Some months passed and I decided that I'd take on this project. I found out that the character was originally made by * renonevada, as a part of his Deviant Pokémons. It made the project seem even funnier, since I have drawn some 120 ASCII Pokémons already.

So here's the result, submitted with the permission of *renonevada. It's almost a straight depiction of the original character, because I don't have the skills to render such characters in different positions. And the wiffle bat had to stay, though I shortened it a bit. I'm quite happy with the piece, though some of the limbs look a bit weird. The eyes were definitely the hardest part, the original character has anime-like eyes with long lashes and I didn't have much resolution - and the eyes weren't parallel, so it wasn't possible to make them symmetric. Taking that into consideration they seem ok now. The lettering is the same I designed for Osmi ASCII for `gas13, with slight modifications.

You're great at lineart, diamondie. The variety of different characters you use gives it the best curve possible with ascii. The only things I can see that could be better is, like =jSepia mentioned, the right ear, and also the nostrils. It looks a bit strange with two characters for one and one character for the other. Other than that, it's amazing!

Wow. 120 pokémon is a very big achievement. I'll check them out :D!

theres something a little odd about the way s/he is holding the wiffle bat, but its ASCII art and compromises must be made.

a dragon w/ a wiffle bat? i can only imagine what those games are like, sunday afternoons in central park.

Thank you! Your comments are probably the most flattering and encouraging ones I get. I think my first piece of ASCII art looked pretty much like a tin can, too, though it wasn't a self-portrait but a weird character I made up. You just need a little practice, you should probably begin with something simpler than a self portrait. I think that mushroom character would look neat in ASCII.

Fantastic outlining work with really good character selection. It's hard to see any flaws, given the subject matter.

LOL... 120 pokemon. WOW, that is quite an achievment. You almost have all of the ones from the original two games O.O I like the dragon and the fact that he's carrying a stick. "Speak quietly and carry a big stick." - Roosevelt ( I think that's the right quote)

"Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far. " - Theodore Roosevelt [link]

He claimed to have been quoting a West African proverb.

I'm not experienced enough to give good critique on this piece, this is just a beginner's opinion:
I like the use of both dots and commas in the wiffle bat, it's good to avoid monotony. Something similar could have been done to give more roundness to some long dotted lines in the tail. The use of pipes (|) and slashes (/) make the body look solid and massive; you took good profit of the Fixedsys font. But when it comes to the horns, the look is assymetrical (is that the right word?). The difference of characters make the right horn stand out, while the left horn is not so noticeable. Maybe some more straight lines in the left horn and smoother characters for the right one ( ()[]{} ) would give a good balance.
I agree with you, the limbs look weird, but they also did in the original picture, so it's not your fault. About the eyes, they don't look weird from far, or at least I didn't notice they were looking in different directions until the full view. The dots are well done, irregular enough to look natural, and round enough to look cute.
Over all, a good asciification, the likeness is obvious and the choice of characters wasn't a problem for you. Nothing more to say, lineart isn't my thing yet.
I still wonder how do you choose the proper size for an ASCII lineart? Both this ASCII and your pokémon seem to fit exactly in your canvas to keep their original shapes. I find this matter to be a very difficult choice in such a small resolution.

I don't really consider your opinion a beginner opinion. You are an expert in newbie's disguise! ;-> And thank you for commenting.

I'm not sure about the tail, but the horns do look assymmetric. But IMO they look that way in the original picture, too. I don't think brackets would have helped any.

Choosing a proper canvas size may be difficult, if you haven't noticed by Pokémons vary a bit in size. I think in general the earlier ones are smaller than the new ones and when making some of the most difficult ones (like the birds and Poliwag with the spiral on its tummy) I wish I had used a higher resolution! With other stuff I sometimes start at a size that turns out to be either too small or of the wrong size by other means.

Thanks for commenting. It didn't take that much time since I have over seven years of practice with this. Perhaps 2-3 hours, it's very hard for me to say since I don't look at the clock when drawing. Picking the right characters is a skill you learn with time, just like almost everything that has to do with art.

what about when it comes to creating a character from your imagination and all youve got to go on is your scetching ability practice may become monotinous

Hmm, I'm not sure if I understood the question correctly. I don't really invent my own characters, I usually draw either existing characters/designs, everyday objects or come up with my own designs, which are usually rather abstract in nature. I don't think drawing ASCII becomes too monotonous, because I don't do too much of it. Sometimes I have a break of several months, then I can draw multiple pieces in one sitting.
