The character colors are spot on and really take on a animation feel. On that part I think you nailed it. One other thing you can try is color holding the linework to a dark brown or blue. It will add even more to the animation feel. You're not as successful on the background or the ship. With the ship, I think you should have stayed with the same animation style you went with on the characters. The harsh texture and airbrush feel contradicts the style of the rest of the piece and subtracts from the overall feel. A blast effect behind the ships would probably be a good idea as well to push the forward and separate them from the background. You're more successful on the space background but the border between the planet and space is too harsh and should be softened. Remember to use your reference and go online to look at picture of planets and how the look in surrounding space. When you decide to do painted backgrounds it's less forgiving and people will find fault easier even when they don't know why. Like them saying "I don't like it but I can't really say why". It's because you are trying to do something more realistic and their subconscious is catching the inconsistencies in your painting and real life. This is why reference is so important.
Great effort my friend and if you decide to try the changes I've suggested, I would love to see it!

HAHA! That's pretty funny! tell your friend to come on over and I'll give him a day on my contiq with all my tolls and he can try and create something just to see how well he does. All the photoshops and Cintiqs in the world won't help an artist if they don't know how to draw in the first place=-)

Took the better part of a day. No wash underneith thought hat would have probably helped. Done entirely in prismacolor
