My work aims to explore concepts of the conscious and the sub-conscious,and how we might move between the borders of the mind and the borders of the physical world itself. It encompasses my personal perception of the world how I view it, and what society reflects back onto the individual. Imagine
yourself looking through a prism at various objects. This would give you an indication of how everyone looks at the same objects but perceives them in a uniquely personal way. From the other end of the prism the refracted colours of the rainbow return to pure white light, symbolising where individuals, in order to mix with others, need to modify their personal perception and adopt a shared perception of the world. For the past two years my work has revolved around a strong interest in Russia, its history and its society, and how it reflects on its people today. Throughout my childhood its history and its politics were relayed to me from a strong left-wing point of view by my mother who had visited Russia as a young woman. I visited Russia myself in February of 2005 and explored Moscow and St Petersburg.
You need to study the recent past in order to develop an understanding of the present and future. We need to learn the lessons of the past in order to ensure a future with certainty. This is what I am trying to convey through my work.
