"Expecto Patronum!" Rachel exclaimed holding out her wand. She smiled as bluish white smoke escaped her wand and took shape in front of her face. Her smile widened as it became an otter smiling playfully at her. Slowly, she started to extend her left hand, completely mesmerized by the little creature.

"I'll call you Slides," she whispered smiling slightly as her patronus started to wrap around her.

"Very good, Rachel! Just continue to concentrate," her professor said pleased as she walked by.

"Want to know my happy thought, Slides?" she whispered so softly she could barely hear herself. "It's finally having friends...the friends I have met here," she whispered letting her gaze travel to Helena who was still having a little trouble getting her patronus to materialize and Cataline whose patronus was starting to take shape. "That's my happiest memory."

=====================================

Woo, first in a series most likely. Yay for inspiration - especially of the Harry Potter kind. My muse had been silent there for a while, but she seems to be waking up.

Rachel's patronus is an otter because I think my patronus would be an otter. Otters are intelligent creatures (as well as so cute!) with a nice playful side. While I haven't really drawn in Rachel's playful side, it's certainly there. It just seems more fitting since she's not really all that sly (or else she would have a fox).

In a way, it's almost like a precursor to the last one ("You Will Never Hurt Them Again") since it's showing how important Rachel's friends are to her.

Hands are mean...hands hate me. I redrew her left hand 5 times until I finally got it where I could stand it, and the same goes for the right. For some reason I just have so much trouble with hands. I'm afraid her arms may be a little skinny again, too. Grr, I'll just keep practicing and studying.

My first time drawing an otter, too. I think I did pretty good. It looks like an otter to me. ^^

Took about 3 hours, all done in Photoshop with my trusty tablet.

This is cute! The otter came out nicely. :)

I couldn't help but notice that you mentioned how the hands and arms drove you nuts. I won't put too much face value into her arms since it's a cartoon, but the dimension is fine; they just need rounding to show some musculature.

As for her hand, the fingers are excellent but the back of her hand is a little bulbous. Make it the exact opposite (slightly concaved) and you've got a winner.

Yep, it literally takes plenty of elbow grease, no pun intended. Not to worry, every artist has felt the wrath of the hand gods at one point or another. :)
