Prop eight was, I believe, a proposition which removed the right of same-sex couples in California to get married.

-It passed.

I'm not entirely sure what other rights it does and does not effect - that's pretty much the point of debate.

Prop 8 ruined lots of dreams...It even ruined some people's lives. Honestly, I broke down crying when I heard that it was still standing.

But, my state allows gay marriage, and many other states are starting to allow it. California must be filled with douche bags.

Prop. 8...don't even get me started. I have so many gay friends and family members...and brothers I know are going to end up gay, that it makes me sick to think that they may not ever be able to have that precious memory of their marriage. Unless they go to Canada. I don't see how anyone can say it'll destroy the "sanctity" of their marriage. Prop. 8 is destroying happiness! "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness", right? I just find it disgusting that people are letting their religious beliefs get in the way of someone else's life and happiness. It's all completely idiotic.

oh! i don't know why i always thought you were american! don't i feel stupid! -- but i'm sure by now you know it was proposition eight to ban gay marriage; it was only in california--other states had a different "prop" number for that and some states didn't have it at all. but cali being the most famous state with the most publicity, the whole country knew what prop 8 was.

What a fucking ridiculous semantics battle. Honestly if you can't stand the idea of two people of the same sex getting married, then just make everyone get a civil union.

The only fucking reason this is such an issue is because we don't have enough seperation of church and state.

Thank you ST, thank you so much for saying this.
I think that prop. 8 was so ridiculous, I debated my point for months, when you apply reducto ad absurdo as kitamai did maybe they'd understand.
I love how people can say "What, no! I'm not homophobic in the slightest! I'm just going to slowly strip you of your rights, it's not because I have anything against gay people, I just don't want our children thinking that homosexual relationships are normal! That and homosexuals are going to hell! :D"
As a last resort when they are losing the argument they always say the same thing: "I have gay friends."

I think that people have every right to not want it and that we shouldn't even think of doing things like that. It's kind of hypocritical because people say "they shouldn't tel other people who to marry...BLAH BLAH BLAH" but at the same time we're saying that people don't have a right to oppose it. (I'm not against it or anything)

But the thing is that it kinda has to be that way because there's no middle ground to stand in, so everyone is hypocritical.

Why can't there be a middle ground? I'm not for or against it. I believe what someone else does with their life is none of my business. I won't tell people they can or can't. It's none of my concern.

I meant for the actual sides. When it comes to people who voted yes, they think gay marriage is wrong and therefore think that the people who want it to be legal are wrong. Those who voted no are the opposite, they think it's right and so the other side is wrong. If you believe one way or the other, others are entitled to their own opinion, but they want their own side to win. And so a middle ground in that case doesn't exist.

:icondestroyingisis:

Well in the case is no middle ground. It's a shame people even care what someone else chooses to do wit their life.

I TOTALLY AGREE. it makes me sick that the 2 friends that i love more than anything in the world, con not get married becasue they are both male, it makes me want to puke. I hope the people who voted yes realise how many people they have hurt with this, I hope that they suffer becasue of it.

I was born and raised in a strict catholic home but i have learned on my own that love is not just a man and a woman. IT'S TWO PEOPLE THAT LOVE EACH OTHER! i still go to a catholic school (not for much longer tho) and i listen to them preach day in and day out about the sancty of marriage and everything else, i actually argued with my religion teacher over this subject after class. it is sad that things are like this and it just needs to freaking stop. people need to get over their problems and grow the hell up, its the 21st century. get over it.

You can have your own opinion, and do, obviously. Like I've said to many, the whole tolerance thing can't be done in either direction because there is no real middle ground. Either you want it or you don't, and it's so passionate that you want your side to the point where you believe the other side is wrong. Period.
