A great horned owl in the moment of touchdown, its wings are fully unfurled in a V‑shape that dominates the composition. Behind the bird, the sky blazes in mix of fiery color for the last glow of sunset. The field below dissolves into an abstract wash of earthy tones.
This was a speed drawing I did while attending a weekend camping trip with my children’s scout troop. I was teaching an afternoon class on art for them and needed a demonstration piece. So, I put this together rather quickly to show the scouts a variety of oil pastel techniques. It looks a bit rough, but I only spent about an hour on it rather than the usual two weeks that I would normally spend on a work.
This is a 14” x 11” piece done on pastel paper using Van Gogh oil pastels.
Thanks for looking,

The elastic pose and story underneath are nice.
