Physical therapy

With their bones slowly but surely mending, keeping the two girls in their large casts became more and more unreasonable. With smaller casts came a bit more freedom, but also some grueling physical therapy.

After spending all this time more or less immobilized in hospital beds and wheelchairs, even short sessions of walking turned out to be more painful for their atrophied muscles than their still aching bones.

But the hospital staff were very clear on this, without some muscle growth, a further reduction of their casts was out of the question.

As they still blamed each other for their latest accident, they were dead set on revenge, preferably by sending each other back to the fracture ward. But their still aching bones, weary muscles and the awareness of how fragile their bodies still were led to both rivals realizing that it would be sensible to put their quarrels on hold for the time being.

After all, revenge was only half as sweet when they themselves ended up just as broken in the same hospital room.

After months of hurling barely intelligible insults and allegations at each other, things (quite literally) started to move: The promise of further cast reductions combined with the imagination of themself being free of their debilitating casts, while the other was still helpless, stuck and at their merci, worked wonders on their motivation.

Despite the torment it caused their battered bodies, quickly some kind of physical therapy arms race ensued: They both demanded as much therapy as possible, determined to make sure they got at least as much exercise as the other, often exercising to the brink of exhaustion.
