Yoshiro (Mario Story Fruit Shake) by DerekminyA Yoshiro (Mario Story Fruit Shake) by DerekminyA
One of the baddest Yoshis around! In fact, Yoshiro's considered the anti-Yoshi by so many, he's a real scourge! While everyone else takes the hard way in his races, Yoshiro takes the easy way out using his special abilities! It's only logical he'd annihilate his racing rivals this way! Opponents would rather switch out than receive pity roses for their loss! Better keep your eye on what's important and not clunk out!

Yoshiro appears as a quest NPC in an upcoming Paper Mario fangame topic of the same name. That said, he's heavily inspired by a character from Super Mario RPG, Boshi, whose legal ownership leaves Boshi directly unusable.

UPDATE (MAY 4th): Many more poses added.

Isn't Boshi owned by Nintendo? I know a lot of the other Super Mario RPG characters are left in copyright limbo but shouldn't Boshi be automatically owned by Nintendo, what with him being a Yoshi?

It's not known how extensive Square Enix's ownership of the Super Mario RPG characters is, or how their contract was worded. The most likely case with Boshi and other characters like him is that while the species and general look is owned by Nintendo, Square Enix has claim to Boshi's characterization and details they contributed not suggested by Nintendo's works- a dual ownership situation, where both companies have to agree. (It's a situation I feel may also impact some of the Rabbids in the upcoming crossover.)
While Nintendo could rhetorically create a bad boy Yoshi with an attitude as an "homage character" without paying Square Enix, they'd have to change a notable amount of details and specifics around (name, motivations, color, the type of shades worn[if any], alternate clothing, possibly age and gender) to maintain plausible deniability.

So your saying that even if Nintendo own the species, the fact that Square Enix created his identity means that they have partial ownership of him. Thank you for explaining that to me.

I know the companies who made these other two characters would likely have a different agreement, but who would Rookie and Mr L be owner by? Would those two automatically be owned by Nintendo or could they potentially suffer the same fate if Nintendo and the other two companies had similar contracts?

After quickly looking at a video of the Superstar Saga credits, the end states "All Rights, including the rights of Game, Scenario, Music and Program, reserved by Nintendo. Regardless of the above, the copyright of character GENO reserved by Square Enix Co LTD."
The fact Square's mentioned, but not AlphaDream, strongly suggests Nintendo completely owns everything in at least Superstar Saga, and AlphaDream has some kind of rights transferral waiver clause in their contract for anything not suggested by the platformers. It's just AlphaDream's conveniently the only one using certain characters, and the other companies are being polite in this manner.

I'll check Super Paper Mario's credits in a bit to see what the situation is there.

EDIT: ...and here's the results. From Super Paper Mario's credits...

"All Rights, including the copyrights of Game, Scenario, Music and Program, reserved by Nintendo and Intelligent Systems."

So the Paper Mario characters are shared between two different companies- one that's owned by Nintendo, but a separate one nevertheless.

You didn't have to look that up just to answer my question. Thank you so much though.

So all of the Mario & Luigi characters are owned by Nintendo whereas the Paper Mario characters are owned by Nintendo AND Intelligent Systems. That's quite interesting.
