THANATOS - God of Death

"Thy sleep perpetual bursts the vivid folds

by which the soul, attracting body holds:

common to all, of ev'ry sex and age,

for nought escapes thy all-destructive rage." (Orphic hymn to Thanatos)

Thanatos is the personification of death in Greek myth.

Homer describes Thanatos as being the twin brother of Hypnos, the God of Dreams. This is so fascinating, as sleep and death are so closely related. Later on, in psychology Thanatos came to symbolise one of our strongest subconscious instincts, that of seeking death itself.

SMITE has given him a really strong design, with a funeral mask and a huge scythe. I especially liked his wings and the various elements of his armour. Really great design work.
