Athena Character Developement Sheet II by Deorse Athena Character Developement Sheet II by Deorse
Drawn entirely with black ballpoint pen & ink on 6.25"X 9" inch(15.7X 22.7cm) sheet of cardboard.

Yeah, this one took waayy longer than it should have to complete. I had a few things come up during the completion of this piece such as overcoming my minor medical complication and depression as a result while I was in the midst of trying to draw up all of the lineart to this which made it hard for me to find motivation to finish this; but needless to say, I've done just that.

1.) Athena and Nike acting silly, being themselves.

2.) *BAD ASS* This was kind of a pose that I was trying to envision when someone jumps down when they're on the verge of landing an attack "video game style". This pose in of itself posed quite a few challenges to overcome, but needless to say Athena came out looking pretty good, I had to include her owl companion to add to the dynamics of this one scene. That shield...

3.) "Aw, such a loyal feathered companion," something I'd imagine Athena saying to her owl. I liked drawing this one, it came out really well.

4.) Most challenging scene to draw. All of those characters interacting together in one frame, it was a challenge for me. In Greek mythology Athena and Ares often butted heads, Athena not taking a liking to Ares' threatening posture of grabbing his sword. I'd also imagine that Nike being one of Athena's closest friends and allies not being too far away to help Athena "defuse" the situation between her and her impudent older half-brother. Along with the "surprised expression" on Ares' face that it would add to the humor to add some text dialog. Both Athena and Nike came out really good in this frame. Also note this is my first time ever depicting Ares in my art, I have no other or previous concept art for him, needless to say that I am pretty impressed with how well his armor came out even though I kind of threw the design together in a whelm, and "that expression" on his face is absolutely priceless. I might consider revising him later on and possibly redesigning his armor, but right now I actually have great appreciation for the rams and the ram horns decorations that embody his plate armor.

Well that's pretty much it.

I love her facial expressions...
And, is the last picture Athena and Hera ganging up on Ares during the Trojan war?

Thank you. I'm glad that you liked it.

As for the last picture  Athena Character Developement Sheet II by Deorse , no. That is Athena and Nike ganging up on Ares. Fascinating story about Athena and Nike though, they are depicted as having known and being very fond of one another. There is no specific references in Greek mythology but as far as the "relationship" goes between Athena and Nike, they were just really good friends. They weren't "bed partners" as some people would like to be lead to believe. Athena chose to live a permanent life of celibacy and Nike as far what little information that I can read up on her, didn't really have any specific relationships with anyone of that sense. Nike was charioteer, a messenger goddess for the heavens, and bringer of the message of victory for all those who were last to be standing on the battlefield after a battle was over. She was depicted as presenting victors with a sash, a palm leaf, and a challis to drink out of as a symbol of their bravery, courage, unyielding efforts, and their victory. It is however said that in Greek mythology that Athena and Nike started working together a lot more and later on became inseparable friends. I'd say that the level of friendship between Athena and Nike was almost equivalent to the Nymph Pallas, before she was accidentally slain by the hands of Athena. Nike would often times work as Athena's personal messenger goddess both on and off the battlefield, she'd also be seen working together fighting along side with Athena in some of her battles. This could be reason why when you see certain depictions of Athena that she often referred to "NikeAthena" which literally translates to "Athena Victorious" or "Victorious Athena". In the Parthenon before it was destroyed in the 1600's, it housed a 30 foot tall marble and gold statue of Athena, in the palm of her right hand stood a 6 foot tall statue of Nike. Like I said there's no specific story-wise references between Nike and Athena, I just like portraying the dynamics between the two of them in my mythology fan art since it wasn't portrayed all that much though story.

As far as Athena and Hera go, they did not get along. Hera was jealous and she despised Athena, in fact seen she even seen Athena as a potential threat. I think Hera's animosity for Athena stemmed from Zeus's affair with Athena's mother, the titan goddess Metis. The fact that he had an affair with her, then lied and tied to cover it up and Athena being born as a result was enough for Hera to both hate Athena and Zeus for that. As far as Hera and Athena "teaming up", that was only out of spite of Aphrodite after the "Judgement of Paris", that they ended up fighting her in the Trojan War. Aside from that, Athena and Hera didn't get along.

Now as far as the relationship between Athena and her half-sister Artemis goes, I think that they were indifferent with each other. They didn't really interact. Artemis was always gone excursions spending most of her time in the wilderness either hunting alone or out in a hunting party with her fellow nymphs, wile Athena was spending most of her time either out on a battlefield or in the inner cities being a patron, settling disputes, and establishing art and industry for the people.

Thank you so much for the background stories! Of course, silly me forgot to read the description. Yes, I've heard the Athena Parthenos having a statue of Nike in her hand but I didn't think much of it. Now I know, since you've told the story. You really seem to have a lot of knowledge in Greek mythology, and I love that you took the time to write such a long reply and explain the legend to me.
I wonder, have you read the Iliad or the Odyssey?

Sorry for the late response. I've read the Odyssey, but not the Iliad. I've read enough of the description to the the Iliad to know basically what the story was about and how the Trojan War came to be.

I can't even put to words how much I love this one. It is so much fun to watch, so creative and so extremely well drawn. Those expressions are excellent. I absolutely love Athena's face where she interacts with her owl, so adorable and beautiful. Then her "video-game" pose. Man, that's epic! That playful one is just as great and the last one, so badass. Athena's hair and face their... who can't fall in love with her.
Keep up the awesome work, I can't wait to see more!

Thank you. So sorry that I'm getting to this one so late. For some reason your message didn't appear in my inbox until about a month later. But thank you for those kind, wonderful, thought-provoking comments. Yeah, Id have to agree the fame where Athena is interacting with her owl is also one of my favorites as well.

Don't worry, I understand. Something similar happened to me before too.
You're very welcome. I always enjoy your art and the passion you put onto paper.
