What do you know about POD?

Journal Entry: Sun Jul 4, 2010, 5:11 PM
I am beginning work with a talented artist, :iconneurotic-elf: to produce a holiday novella that features illustrations. Check out the rough draft of a cover...
xmas carole cover000.. by neurotic-elf

At the moment, I am thinking we will have it printed through Lulu. BUT... I had really set my heart on this being a colorful coffee-table style book that people could leave out for the holidays. Sadly, Lulu does not offer hard covers in any size other than standard trade size, 6x9.

Do any of you have information or experience with other POD publishers who might offer larger sized formats in hard cover? I'm open to suggestions, folks. Let me know your thoughts and experiences. Thanks!

  • Listening to: The ceiling fan
  • Reading: Nothing. I ran out of new books!
  • Watching: World Cup Soccer
  • Playing: With a new section of Fellowship Lost
  • Eating: Nothing
  • Drinking: A beer. (Yup. A brewski)

I remember you wanting to do this! This sounds really exciting - I hope you find the right kind of publisher :)

I am so excited about finally being able to get this project in gear, you can't imagine. As you may recall, your name was used as one of the main characters. Lol. If I can't find the kind of publisher who will print a hard cover color book in a larger size, I'll settle for Lulu and the 6x9 format. It will still be cool.

I do recall! I also recall references to Claude Francois! :D It was a great story and I'm really excited that it's finally coming along the way you wanted it to :)

Yep, and Claude is still in the manuscript. He has not been lost to the red-pen of doom!

srsly, think about Shutterfly. They do 'picture books' w / pretty much anything for a good price. Snapfish has some good deals too.

And I know I'm a total fail at reading xmas carol, but can I still do an illustration? :( I promise to read it harder! haha. xD (I get hung up on names, it's like dyslexia to me. ; ; )

If I was having a variety of illustrators contributing, I would say yes in a heartbeat. But Valia was one of my first watchers almost five years ago. She has asked me many times if we could work together on a project. A Carole for Christmas suited her style nicely. I'm afraid having another person contribute a single illustration to the mix would look strange. It would stick out as being too different from the rest of the book.

Don't worry. You and I will partner together on something else. I've been thinking that maybe Deja Few should be a graphic novel. There are things in it that are difficult to explain in words that would work beautifully as illustrations. I was going to corner you soon to see if you wanted to work on something like that with me.

Yar, I can see that. Her style seems really whispy and cool and whimsical.

And I could do Deja Few. :D I read the first chapter BUT REFUSE TO READ MORE OR COMMENT till jon.com is finished. STILL WORKIN ON IT. xD I have time off in July. I CAN READ A GOOD BOOK. shock.

You have lots of reading to do, woman. Get cracking! Hey, I'm off in July too -- right now, in fact. I have all this week off and am wallowing in laziness.

Under the heading "poetry books", Lulu offers a hardcover format in a size that sound more like what you want. Also, this looks more like it'd be set up with graphic design in mind, rather than just traditional text. I'd be shocked if this doesn't solve your problem!

I'd considered something like this just to have a "the artwork of..." book of my some of my art, but figured at this point in time it just wasn't wort the effort.

Maybe I didn't understand their directions, but the poetry book layout you are talking about did not allow customization. It came with ready-made cover and page templates. No customization. You picked a "theme" and dropped in your poetry on the already-designed pages for that theme. Am I missing something? I couldn't find anywhere that would let me upload my own images.

I only know of Createspace as a pod site, but it seems they only do paperbacks. I wish I could be more help here, but the best I can do is wish you luck on your hunt.

Thanks! I forgot about Createspace. But you're right: they only do paperbacks. Still, I need to add them to my list of prospects for future books.
