Suchomimus Tenerensis by DemonML Suchomimus Tenerensis by DemonML
[EDIT] Made some changes based on feedback I got:
> Forearms/hands enlarged slightly
>Shoulder blade has more muscle/no longer as prominent
~~~~~~
Another honest attempt at recreating a scientifically accurate suchomimus Tenerensis. I did my best to draw this guy to scale, and, if I measured correctly, should be roughly 10.5 meters long (give or take). I believe the current holotype is thought to be an almost-mature subadult and estimated between 9.5 and 11 meters depending on the source. I figured an in-between length would be a good representation of the animal's size.
Markings/coloration based loosely off of a Great Blue Heron
Feedback, tips and/or links to informational resources are welcome c:
The muscle tone especially around the neck area is very impressive and accurate.I really find the contrast between the skin texture on the body witht he texture on feet and face realistic.The shading and highlights of the lighting hitting the skin is spot on.The teeth look impressive,and the spotting on the skin to break up the coloration is well done.My only suggestions for some changes would be perhaps some more pattern/coloring on the skin.And maybe the teeth a few shades less white.But I love the perfect proportions and realistic shading and textures.If you were to do other colorings on it may i suggest some more tans and natural browns?
It's such a neat and unusual thing to see a palaeobiology piece on the front page. And about a not-particularly-popularly-known spinosaurid, too. Great work!
Yeah It was a really nice surprise when I logged on today. Suchomimus is my favorite dinosaur, but despite being a large, carnivorous dinosaur that (at least lengthwise) could give t.Rex a run for its money, its not very popular. Most of the attention went to relatives like Spinosaurus and Baryonyx. So I guess I'll just have to join the few Suchomimus fans and spread awareness of this beauty where I can ^u^
/cough/ it is thought that it and Baryonyx might be the same entity though, so there goes that /cough/
This is very much a real dinosaur c:
The person shown is about 1.8meters tall (~5.9ft)
The suchomimus I've depicted is sized at 10.5meters (~34ft) which is in between the estimates for the near-mature subadult specimen of 9.5-11 meters (though some believe it got longer)
Suchomimus isn't, but its close relative Baryonyx is. (unfortunately they muddied the animals real life appearance so much it came out looking like just a big long-faced raptor)
Suchomimus IS in the JW: Evolution game, as part of the Deluxe expansion. Probably gonna drop a couple extra bucks just to get it ;u;
I use just plain old photoshop. It turned out to be a lot more work than I had thought, especially since we dont exactly have photos of what the animal looked like alive. But a fun learning experience all the same c:
I adore it! Very good with the shading as well as small details. The only mistake is I can't imagine the texture, would it be leathery? Soft and skin like? I can, though, imagine the texture quite well on the tip of the (Muzzle, mouth, Jaw, exc ) and on the feet up to ankles.
As far as I know, there are no confirmed skin impressions from this animal, or its close relative, Baryonyx. It would be a guessing game as to how scaly or how big the scales were, if it even had them or maybe had feathers (unlikely but not impossible). I know that it had pressure sensors on its snout, like a crocodile, and that the large scales on the limbs are fairly common on theropods, so it made sense to include them. I had tried once before to represent the animal's scales and was wholly dissatisfied with the result. Not wanting to go down a rabbit-hole of speculation I intentionally left the animal with bare skin.
This wont be the last time I try reconstructing Suchomimus, though, hopefully I learn more in between attempts. Thanks for the feedback c:
I love this, though if I remember correctly it lived in an environment with a fair amount of plants, so maybe some patterning like stripes or splotches of colour on the body could be useful to help break up the outline? I think the muscle covering the back half of the shoulder blade is pretty small, the top of the arm/shoulder should smoothly transition to the back there. Other than that though the anatomy looks pretty good, nice work!
Suchomimus was likely a prominent piscivore based on its dentition, and probably spent a lot of time near bodies of water. Going off of this I decided to give it similar coloration to modern predatory waterfowl, and, admittedly cater to my own aesthetic as I do like the markings of the Blue Heron. Because of this I won't be changing the colors on this depiction. Though with more iterations come more opportunities to experiment with possible markings.
I have, however, altered the shoulder so hopefully its not as shrink-wrapped. Thanks for the feedback c:
No problem! I get the reason and in fairness it's pretty difficult to figure things out about prehistoric environments; I could well be wrong about the one in which Suchomimus lived so I suppose we can agree to disagree on the pattern. Besides, since we know very little about spinosaurs, and therefore things like integument and soft tissue are all up to artistic liscense with them, I can't really pick on colour and pattern either.
As a sidenote if you end up doing a Spinosaurus I'd highly suggest basing the colours and patterns on semi-aquatic reptiles like crocodillians and maybe snakes like water moccasins, though those may not be the best reference since they're pretty different in terms of environment iirc.
This is beautiful, man! The skin texture is so smooth and I love it.
The proportions look great and as usual, your anatomy is superb.
You did a fantastic job with this! :D
Knight's illustrations might be abhorrently inaccurate today, but one can't deny just how exceptionally detailed and beautiful his paintings are. Quite a unique aesthetic
