[Update] Got some pointers on how to make this guy more anatomically accurate, and decided to go ahead and edit over what I already had:
> Completely forgot Sclerotic rings were a thing haha, so eye was shrunk to accommodate one.
> Ear no longer located in the Temporal fenestra
> nostril moved to the front of Nares
>poor guy can now actually open and close mouth properly (jaw no longer shrinkwrapped as much)

Thanks c:

An honest attempt at drawing a scientifically accurate dinosaur, starting with my favorite: Suchomimus

I need more practice with creating realistic skin texture....

Tips/critique welcome

Looks amazing! In love how you draw textures, ugh <3

May I ask what the brush settings are you use for coloring ''realistic'' like this? o: I could really use a good one for my reptile bois as well~

Thanks.
All of the scales/patterns/detail were painted by hand with a plain square brush (the same as the default hard round, just square shaped). no fancy brush settings or textures were used

O, yeah. I was thinking that but I just really like how the brush “looks”. So I wondered if you had it on any special settings. But thanks, I’ll try it out myself

Suggestion: use the shading to emphasize the scale texture.  Right now though the skin has blots on it, his neck looks very smooth, and not scaly.  The colors are gorgeous though!!!

I agree, though with the current skin pattern being as noisy as it is, adding a lot of scales made it look really muddy, so I elected to leave a lot of them out. Maybe next time I can get the texture and color balanced right though. Thanks c:

Unless this is a youngster the eyes are much too large. You see in the Hartman skeletal that you used, the little ring in the orbital fenestrae? Thats called the sclerotic ring, the eye would fit inside that. You can sometimes see the sclerotic ring in life like this ssl.c.photoshelter.com/img-get… The red is actually the sclerotic ring here and you can tell from the shadow it casts on the iris. So in your piece you have the eye filling the entire fenestrae which is just not the case. You have also placed the ear in the wrong spot. I've drawn over a skull to give a couple general tips.  Screenshot 2018-05-16 07.15.43 by arvalis

Wow I forgot all about the "eye rings" whoops.

Def gonna take another swing at drawing these guys later.
Thanks!

Gosh, I love the scales texture and colours! They have this cool kinda crocodilian feel to them. So wonderful! :D Great work <3

I love your ability to make such natural color schemes and patterns. Even with a reference, I get frustrated with it.

I've actually never looked up this dino before so I'm not entirely sure what an "accurate" image would look like, but I think you did an awesome job.

From what I have seen on google, the muzzle is very long and shaped like a very long brick, and has a metric shit ton of teeth. When I compare the anatomy, my first thought is that this is a younger one and hasn't quite finished maturing.

Again, I don't know how accurate google images is because everyone has their own style and that's fine! Just thought I would give my insight on it.

Regardless, this looks awesome and I really enjoy seeing your dino art!

Thanks! I need more practice at it myself, references help though.

The teeth were a pain, I couldnt find a consistent reference for the sizing or number but I found myself referencing the work of :iconscotthartman: for dinosaur stuff, since they seem fairly dedicated to accuracy (where possible) African Fisher by ScottHartman
otherwise I try to use photos of skeleton casts (even if they are made-up/speculative from a lack of specimens) rather than drawings, which vary wildly from artist to artist as im sure you've seen.
Suchomimus isnt a very prevalent dinosaur in popular media, and its not as well studied as, say, T.rex or Velociraptor so a lot of reliable reference requires some digging..

Nah, I understand completely! Again, I think you are doing a great job with it.

I did notice how hard it was to find consistent references for it. Everyone has their own way of interpreting things, but it's all good!
Like you said, just a little digging can go a long way.

I will have to check him out! I really admire people that take anatomy and accuracy into consideration, especially with dinos!

I'm in ur post! Shakin mah fish!

Haha, seriously though, would love to see more dinos from ya :D If you do a full body piece, I might make it into a skin for the Isle! If you're okay with that anyway ^-^
