Heyoka can walk by demona-cast Heyoka can walk by demona-cast
Oil paint on canvas.
This is not the best reproduction, the colours in the clouds muddied a bit when I took the picture. :P Ok by now I know I should learn how to use the digital camera and be using Camera Raw instead of JPEG.

I was asked to paint a mythical figure.
I chose "Heyoka", the trickster god of the Lakota people, North America.
The story behind it basically- When you see lightning you become heyoka or silly. The hoyaka brigs ballance through doing the opposite. If it is hot it will wear masses of clothing and compain of the cold, if their is a famine it will sit around as if it has just gorged itself proclaiming that it could not eat another bite.
It is considdered to be an honerable clown as it speaks truths all others are afraid to vocalise, it is always challenging "the way it is done" and calls attention to things that could (or should) be changed in society.

My painting teacher liked it :P

my dear, it is a lovely painting, though the history has been muddled, first of all, the Heyoka spirit's are not god's, they are Spirit's, the only god that I know of (and I should know much of they Heyoka, as I am Heyoka, and I know of many other spirit's, I live the old way's, I am Lakota, Choktaw, and Tsalagi (cherokee)) as I was saing, the only god I know if is Tunkashila, or Wankatanka, or wakentanka, all of which are name's for the same being, creator, or if you will, the same being, cristian's call God, second would be that you dont become Heyoka by seeing lightning, what I believe you are referencing is the "Thunder Dreamer's" as there are some people who believe you become Heyoka when you DREAM, of lighting, I dont put to much store in that, as I know many people who are not Heyoka, and have dreamed of lightning, I think the reason that came about is that many of us Heyoka, do dream of lighing, as we are close to Wakinyan, the thunderbird, as far as calling the Heyoka spirit's god's, many historian's make the same mistake, but just becasue we show them respect, does not make them god's, and as I said the thunder dreamer's, that is also an understandable missunderstanding.

Much love

Howling Coyote

Ps, the Coyote, he has Heyoka medicine. as well as Iktomi, the spider :)

I'm sure it does. I find that is the same way with a lot of mine. I don't know if it's the quality of my digital camera or if I have poor lighting when I take the pictures or what it is.
