"If we are planning to have even a small chance of success, you must gain connection to Fire and his siblings", Mazeg started after he and Dael returned to the tree. "Put the necklace on again, please."
Dael did as he was asked. He thought the whole thing was crazy, but he was willing to trust the old spirit. Dael knew something odd was going on in Cas Canthar and Cas Denthar. While the story was more than a bit farfetched, it still somehow made sense. Whatever his opinion was, he believed the story enough not to give up and risk the life of his family and countless other people.
"You have been with Fire a very long time, Dael", Mazeg said. "There is a connection between you, but it is weak. It never got to strengthen to levels that would have been needed. Now your mind is too different, a mix of human and a wolf, so it is harder to touch. Not to mention your depression and other negative thoughts."
"So what are you going to do then?" Dael asked. "I can't really change myself."
"My pow

Dael kept running. At first he didn't even think where he was going since he just wanted to get away from danger. Karne wasn't as mad as what Dael had been while he had still been a human, but the druid did have some problems. Dael knew this for sure considering what kind of emotions Karne had sent to him. It was safest idea in Dael's mind to just get far away and then let Mairin find him.
Problem was that Dael had no idea how relentless Karne was. Perhaps the man would follow him for days. Dael thought he'd hide for a week or two. Then go back home, if no one found him before that.
Somehow Dael thought his current direction was fine. He was going pratically straight north. As far as he knew there wasn't anything in there. Perhaps a less populated area? Such place would be fine. He felt it was safe choice. Just going north.
Somewhere during the next day Dael stopped to drink from a stream.
"Should I be doing this", Dael thought. He doubted his earlier thoughts. "I'm always running. Eve

It was done. Dael had explained to his parents everything he had needed to. They had not thrown him out yet. He was hopeful that things would go right eventually.
As for Dael's parents. After the fire they had escaped Cas Canthar immediately. They couldn't let anyone know they had survived. They had barely got out anyway. They had gone a bit different path what Dael had used and went trough Trineyel and from there to Ghandria where they had stayed for a while. Jael had been born there. They had moved to Cas Denthar as soon as Jael showed signs of druid powers. Around this time they also left the peace organization. They had wanted a peaceful normal life. Had they stayed with the peace group, it would have always been a possible source of danger, if they ever got into trouble. Other than that they had lived a normal civilian life.
Dael was happy that Jael had lived a good life.
"Now that you are back with us, I'm sure you'll get good life too from now on", Aern said.

Lanna was crying. She held on to Dael. Aern was sitting on a nearby rock silently with his face buried in his hands. Was this exactly what Dael had wanted to avoid? Both his parents sad and in shock.
"I'm sorry", Dael said.
Lanna looked up to Dael. "No, Dael", Lanna said. "We should be sorry. We ... we saw you die. Instead we left you there to die. I'm so sorry. I wanted to dig you out, but the fire was spreading. The house was coming down. Hunters were coming too. There was no time. You were left alone. What have you gone trough in your life. I can't even imagine it."
Dael didn't say anything. Neither did he look at his mothers eyes. It would come up eventually.
"How did you find us?" Aern asked.
"You are or at least were part of certain peace group", Dael answered. It was better subject of discussion. "I happen to know at least one of their members... from long ago. I recently met her again. She told me you were alive."
"Aern, they are still messing with us", Lanna said. "We told the

Dael woke up sometime early next morning. He had a terrible hangover, but he had got used to such condition over time and just tried to endure it. The place, the inn, stank. Apparently whatever parties the Waktasters had started had lasted for quite a while. Lot's of spills and drunken people still sleeping. Not to mention Dael himself thought he needed a bath too despite that he disliked it.
Dael went outside and looked for a place where he could clean himself. Few people were already outside and many looked at him, their odd guest.
"Uh, a question", Dael said to someone. "Where could I clean myself properly. The whole inn stinks and I stink even worse. Got too drunk."
"Well, if it isn't the wolf", Said the man. "Your fight with Robtan yesterday was pretty good for an unarmed fight."
"It was hardly a fist fight", Dael said. "Besides, if Robtan had a weapon, he would have sliced me to pieces in no time. Then made a rug out of my fur or made it into a loincloth."
"Perhaps", the man said

You just don't say 'no' to Waktaster warriors that surround you. While Dael had never seen or heard of them before, it was clear why Jadta and Eskan, like pretty much everyone who knew of Waktaster's, thought they were the best warriors in matters of physical combat. They were human, but each of them were tall, both men and women. Their muscle's told the brutal tale of how much their bodies had been trained. While Dael had been a physical fighter himself, he had not reached such level himself. He had, after all, been of druid and wizard blood, people who tended to be weaker.
On the way to the Waktaster village, it became clear why Robtan wanted to fight. Well, it wasn't unusual for Waktaster warrior to want a fight, but Robtan had an actual reason. He wanted to marry the clan leader's daughter. To do so he had to prove himself strong enough. This meant he was required to show his strength somehow. Spilling some blood in an extravagant manner was one such way. Dael and his companions me

"I'm sorry, Dael", Mairin said silently and touched Dael gently.
"Why do you care, Mairin", Dael pointed out. "Wasn't it your intention back then to use me until I was found out and then leave me to suffer the consequences? Now you get to see where it led."
"... yes, I admit that", Mairin said. "But that was then. My point of view has changed over the years too. I joined the group that wants peace between druids and wizards. Besides back then I thought you hunted druids because you liked it and were just insane. Yet, you had only been deceived."
"Well you have seen my secret now", Dael said. "Leave me alone. I'm capable of surviving alone. While I do want peace, I have no intention of joining that little group. You say 'organization', but I somehow think of only loose group of people with no real power. Just let me be in peace and tell Eskan and Jadta to leave me alone too."
Mairin sat down on the stool and stared at Dael for a moment.
"Aren't wolves pack animals?" Mairin said. "Are yo

Things could have gone better for Dael. He realized he may have done a miscalculation on Jadta's character. Seriously, didn't the man have anything better to do than to stalk Dael? Like selling the black iron he had been smuggling. Apparently not, Dael realized. At least Dael had good enough senses that Jadta never could surprise him despite the clear attempts to remain unnoticed.
"Get another hobby", Dael said to Jadta as he was hauling his latest catch to Takrak to be sold. He had noticed Jadta already on his way to collect catch from the traps. On his way back he decided to tell the man to fuck off. "Shouldn't you be looking for the druid that stole your sheep? I think you would have better luck at Cas Denthar."
"You are too good", Jadta said as he stood up from a hiding place where he had actually been camouflaged. Dael had got used to Jadta's specific scent already so when he noticed even slight bit of it, he knew the man was around. "Who are you. Really."

Dael was alone again. His only company was his thoughts. Things that Dael didn't wish to remember or think. Yet, as much as he tried he couldn't seem to switch his mind. When he specifically concentrated on doing so he managed to make it go a bit, but then it bounced back in less than a day. It was almost as if something pushed him back, whenever he tried, preventing him from letting go.
Realizing the fact that he would not be returning to his prefered mindset anytime soon, at least not until it randomly went that way on is own, Dael knew he had to learn be human again. Sure he had memories, but he wasn't entirely human anymore. He would have to learn not to sniff at things visibly all the time and such things. He would have to walk on two feet, which Dael found uncomfortable, not to mention the boots. Dael picked up a cane. It helped with balance. Dael thought it made him look like an old man. Perhaps it was good. He would seem harmless.
He also started thinking of a new name. Tuft wo

He had done it. Dael had reached relative safety. There were dangers all over the world, but he knew he was now as close to normal as something like him could get. No one would find him in the forests of Jajend that spread further than there probably was in entire Cas Canthar total. He felt safe enough that he let go of the human side he had kept around in his mind during the escape. It just made him think of things he didn't want to. He wanted to leave everything behind and start over. Dael wanted a simple, but happy life. He had always had practically the opposite.
The forest were older and thicker than in Cas Canthar. There were more wildlife and Dael was succesful in hunting them most of the time. He had a bit of trouble finding a good place where he could sleep. He wondered maybe he would have to dig one for himself. Before he did that, though, he found something else that was interesting.
One day as Dael was still looking for a good place to settle down he came across some traps.

Dael ran and made sure to keep the river, Surge, next to him at all times. It would take him past his home, Wood's End, eventually. He had to see it.
Even, if Dael didn't like his human side anymore, he partially let it out. He was worried that he would miss something important with just the wolf side. He couldn't tell, if anyone would bother coming after him and he wanted to realize the signs before it was too late, if it came to it. He was after all a slave. He was a traitor too. He was a cursed druid. No cursed druid had yet ever escaped and wizards might want to prevent it so that druids would not be able to study the condition in detail and perhaps learn to reverse it.
It was at least a warm summer and not something like winter. His tracks would be rather unique since no human nor animal left such tracks. Dael had not ever seen another wolf cursed druid even, if he probably wasn't the only one.
Dael had some problems too. It wasn't easy to get food alone. Sure he could find scents

Dael's life finally stopped throwing him around. While it certainly wasn't what he would have wanted, he himself wasn't much bothered by it anymore. Thige had been good for his word. While Dael on most days worked in the fields pulling ploughs or carrying bags and boxes or something similar, he each day, when slaves were sent back to their pens, had his warm place for him and food to eat. The simple necessities of life were met.
Not everything was nice, though. Dael was a slave and was treated that way by everyone. Additionally since he was a cursed druid, he attracted some extra attention. Passing people pointed and laughed at him sometimes. Some children threw rocks while others played tricks to him with magic. It wasn't just the outsiders. Thige's wife, Tenan, didn't like druids, but understood their work was useful. If she didn't like druids, she really disliked the cursed ones.
"Thige why do you keep buying those disgusting creatures", Tenan questioned Thige. Dael happened to be l

Dael woke up. He felt wrong. It wasn't just the pain that came from obvious beating while he had been unconscious. He couldn't yet focus his sight, but things smelled odd, sounds sounded odd, he felt strange feeling all over his body. Then touched his face with his hand as he was strying to get a hold of his dizzynes and focus. His head, it was wrong shape. Around then his sight was starting to focus and he realized what had happened. His head was no longer a human head, but instead something like a wolf's head. There were similar changes all over his body. Grayish fur, tail, hands resembled something in between paws and human hands and clawed fingers, feet were almost entirely paw shaped. His body was some mixture of a human and a wolf. Dael had been cursed at some point.
Yeah, that is what wizards did to druids Dael knew. He had spent that short moment as a wolf when he needed to catch Roag. Too recently. He was no longer human.
It was probably just at the end of the fight, Dael real

Dael knew he didn't have time to waste. There was no telling how long Carmatas would stay around in plain sight. That man just had to die and the chance for it was now. It was entirely possible another chance would not show up ever.
If Dael's attack was succesful, he still would have extremely hard time getting away. It was worth the risk. Carmatas was responsible for all that pain he had suffered in his life. Dael would avenge his parents.
He had not gone completely crazy, though. Dael realized the opponent was not just anyone. Carmatas was a level ten wizard and Dael had no idea how strong his druid power was. As far as he knew druids didn't even test it like wizards did – they didn't want a power based caste system. Anyway, Dael still hoped he would be at least strong enough that his druid powers together with his knowledge of fighting against magic users was enough. For a moment Dael felt he should forget about it and run, but he ignored it. He wasn't going to allow himself g

"Will you just let me in the archives", Dael complained at the guard who was blocking his way to the hunter archives.
Dael had immediately walked to the archives after he returned from the meeting with Mairin. Things were not going his way as usual lately.
"You have been forbidden to enter the archives", told the guard to Dael and took paper out of a desk nearby. "See... it reads here not to let you in. Though from what I have heard, you can barely read. If you want, I spell it for you. They had enough of you wandering in there for no reason."
"I need to see something from there, damn it", Dael said. "I think I'm finally at a breaktrough with my research. You will see results soon!"
"I have my orders, Dael", the guard insisted. "Fuck off or I'll have you thrown into the dungeon for a while. We even captured a druid today. You could keep company to him!"
"Fuck you!", Dael replied. "I could kick your ass right here and now."
"Are you threatening me?" Asked the guard angrily.

"How did you even find me", Dael asked Mairin several days later as he was handing her some recent hunter reports. "Surely, you have had annoying hunters after you and you didn't show this much interest on each of them. What made youn interested enough? Also you found me before I even joined the hunters."
"Let's just say you have done some interesting things", Mairin said. "Druids that have had close encounter with you have said there was something odd about their encounters. I just happened to put it together that it was always the same guy and then I just observed you until I decided to act. I kept pretty close eye to you. At a point I thought perhaps you were a traitor."
"Whatever", Dael replied. "What do you mean by 'close encounters'? I have not had close encounters with any druids. At least that they'd be able to talk afterwards."
"You have for example some prisoners", Mairin said. "You beat someone I knew half dead, you know. Then there was one that didn't exactly get close to y

So... I just couldn't get myself motivated to write Chaz. It was a mistake to start the sequel until I was perfectly okay with the story. I had problems all over it and I had to change so many things and right now I'm not feeling like tearing it apart even for fun anymore. I suppose I will eventually finish it, but it won't happen in a long time.

I was then reading trough my stories and I somehow got interested in Dael's story again. I have said it in several places, but that story was the very first one I ever made up. No I didn't think of storylines before. I never even though up this stuff. I was naive back then and the storyline was just the same. It has sit in my folders for years. It has changed too over time. Yet it has always been close to my heart. The very first story that I spent huge amount of time planning before I even tried to write it.

Yeah, the storyline is still a bit naive and I know a few spots where there are some plotholes, but I have tried to plug them or just hope anyone doesn't notice them. Yet, I have found deep interest to write it again after so long time. I have produced about 10 chapters of it in matter of few weeks. Usually producing a single chapter has take about a month.

It is what I do now. I'll see about other stuff once it is done or I lose interest. Right now I just want to write the intersting parts at least, which will last for a while, I think.
