I am a comic artist living in Edinburgh. I've been drawing since I could hold a pencil, and my main artistic focus is my comic, Eon's World 2.0, a sci-fi adventure series set in a future loosely based on the Sonic and Star Fox game series, with a generous helping of Star Wars thrown in for good measure.

Eon's World Vol. 1 Page #1.06
<<Previous Page --- Next Page>>

The inside of the Squirrel residence in the original version of Eon’s World was an isometric environment from the Mega Man Battle Network games -- the house the player starts in, I believe. It was pretty good, if I’m honest, but kind of limited and difficult to edit. So, for the remaster, I decided to completely re-make this house... well, sort of. Basically, I took some assets I originally made for the very last story arc of Eon’s World Vol. 1 back in early 2011 (a story that will not be appearing in the remaster, as it happens, so it would be a shame to let those assets go to waste) and gave them a bit of an overhaul to create a fairly comprehensive home environment for Eon and his family. I’m pretty pleased with it and looking forward to re-creating classic Eon’s World scenes in it, since Eon’s home in Station Square did feature quite a lot early on.

I’ve made a couple of changes where world-building is concerned, also. When I first started Eon’s World in 2002, all I knew about Sonic’s world were a handful of cities and islands. No lore had yet been established about global politics. Sonic Adventure 2 introduced a President, whose country was threatened by Doctor Eggman, but no country name was given, and it wasn’t clear whether this country encompassed the whole world or only a small part of it. And the relationship between the President and GUN was unclear. GUN seemed fairly autonomous at this point. Being the imaginative kid I was, I filled in the blanks with lore I made up, which naturally didn’t jive with the scraps of info that trickled out over time from subsequent games. Three years later, Shadow the Hedgehog debuted, and revealed the country’s name to be the United Federation. After that, I made some effort to incorporate that name into Eon’s World, but never in the way I really felt right. So, going back to re-make these stories has given me an opportunity to give the United federation what I think is its proper role in a story that spins off from the lore established in the Sonic franchise up to at least Sonic Adventure 2.

Also, I never bothered with mobile phones in Eon’s World back in the day. This is mostly because any sprites I’d have made would have simply been tiny and hard to discern from any other small object a character may be holding. This is of course compounded by the fact that back when I first started this comic, mobile phones were a lot smaller. We didn’t have smartphones then, after all. But going back and remastering the series, I’ve found that mobile phones can be useful parts of the story. Of course, the idea of having modern day smartphones five hundred years from now is probably about as silly as the future sometimes looked in classic Star Trek. I imagine by the 26th century, we’ll have moved to some kind of cybernetic communications implants that allow us to browse the internet and make phone calls with our minds. (And, in the inevitable cyberpunk dystopia the world is heading for, will allow mega corporations to hack people’s brains...) But, hey, smartphones are good enough for my purposes and they do certainly exist in Vol. 2.

Finally, is that a Samanfur the Fox I spy on that screen in Ant's study? Any readers of Eon's World from way back when may remember her, and we'll be seeing more of her soon!

Eon's World Vol. 1 Page #1.05

So, when I started on my initial pass at remastering Eon’s World Vol. 1 a year ago, I didn’t plan on changing the visuals at all, if I could help it. Even new content I was going to create in the style of any contemporary stories. However, when it came to GUN, I soon chose to relax that rule a little and used custom sprites I’d later made for them, instead of the Mega Man Zero Resistance sprites I originally started with. For this pass at the remaster, I am basically re-creating everything using the best assets I have available (and even making some new ones), and that applies to the soldier sprites used here as well as the main characters. However, as these sprites were made for the UNDF, the significantly less sinister military that replaced GUN later in the story (spoilers!), I wanted there to be something different about these soldiers to what will come later, particularly something to mark them as part of a -- let's be quite honest here -- fascist military force. Based on the soldier NPCs that appear in the game, Shadow the Hedgehog, I gave these GUN troops a new helmet to obscure their faces and give them a real uniformed goon squad appearance. Seeing how well this works in the first panel here, I decided to make an artistic choice going forwards that all regular GUN foot soldiers will look completely identical. Am I making a political comment about the militarisation of police forces or how uniformed services rob people of their individual identities?

Yes. Yes, I am.

Anyway, hi CJ! Yes, long time friend and brother-in-arms to Eon and teacher of magic to Silky (spoilers!), CJ Kitmyth makes a proper debut here, which I think is well-deserved by such a vitally important character to the Eon’s World mythos (and a main character of the recently concluded ninth chapter of Vol. 2, I might add). But here he’s ten years younger and life is very different for him. He’s still a wizard-in-training at the local Mages Guild in Station Square at this point. I should probably note that CJ is about two years older than Eon, who is 16. It doesn’t seem like a huge age difference, but it is kind of an unusual age gap between school friends. But I figure they came to know each other through two avenues: one, they both learned swordplay under Cookirini and two, CJ came to Eon’s defence once or twice while he was being bullied. And being a fox with two tails, I imagine CJ got a bit of bullying himself, until he was able to start throwing spells at bullies, that is.

While I’m giving out ages, I might as well confirm that Eon is 16, Silky is 15, and CJ is 18. And, sure, she’s not on this page, but she is another major character in Eon’s World, so Cookirini is 24 at this time. (And if you really want to know, Eon’s father is 51 and his mother is 49.) There we go, some ages established. But, unlike The Simpsons or, hell, the actual Sonic the Hedgehog game series, time does pass here and all characters in Eon’s World age.

Eon's World Vol. 1 Page #1.04

If I was going to have the destruction of the Moon depicted in Eon’s World, I absolutely had to work Doctor Eggman’s broadcast into it. Being the vain and self-absorbed would-be-tyrant he is, I figured Eggman would find a way to hack the airwaves and have his broadcast running on a loop until he was satisfied the whole world knew what he’d done. Of course, what was never touched on in Sonic Adventure 2 is whether or not anyone was killed in this attack. SA2 doesn’t suggest the Moon is inhabited, as it largely appears to have a very contemporary setting. But then, it also has advanced military robots and mechs and a space colony, built inside a hollowed out asteroid at least fifty years earlier. Now, when SA2 came out, space flight wasn’t even fifty years old yet. So this is, honestly, how I’ve always justified the futuristic setting of Eon’s World (five centuries in the future), which would presuppose that the Moon is most likely inhabited. So, heck, I made that the case and, with it, the tragic loss of a least a million lives during this attack. I think people tend to look at Eggman and see a bumbling oaf. But when I look at him, I see a man who was willing to destroy the Moon just to make a statement and to wipe entire nations off the map next, too. Doctor Eggman is dangerous and people underestimate him at their peril.

Eon’s parents didn’t originally appear in Eon’s World until about five years into the comic’s run, and his mother only appeared in one story arc. His father, being a prominent senator, appeared in a few more stories, but only really in his capacity as a senator and not a father. So, this has been an interesting story to write. Eon’s World hasn’t really delved into family relationships all that often, but Eon is a kid at this point, and one with a frightfully normal life. So, it stands to reason that he’s going to have some overbearing parents to deal with. (Yes, I know his parents are only acting like this because they love him, I get it.)

Look! Half of the Moon is gone?!

Yep, this story is set concurrently with the events of Sonic Adventure 2, in particular the destruction of the Moon (hey, Old Man Eon did say his tale began on the day that Doctor Eggman destroyed the Moon, didn’t he?).

Most stories don’t really focus on regular people living through times of crisis; they tend to focus instead on the heroes and their struggle to prevent the villains from committing atrocities. I thought it would interesting to start Eon’s story here, at a time when it looked like the world was about to end and he was powerless to stop it. After all, this is Eon when he was just a boy, long before he was a Jedi. Sure, he can swing a sword, but there is nothing he can do to save the world from whatever force just destroyed the Moon. (Of course, if you’ve played Sonic Adventure 2, you know exactly what’s happened to the Moon.)

How do the little people, helpless as they are, deal with situations like this? And how does living through it affect them in the long run?

Happy birthday to me,

I just turned 33,

But I still make sprite comics,

Happy birthday to me!

Seriously, though, today is indeed my 33rd birthday, but that has nothing to do with this page, so enough about that.

Hi, Cookirini! Readers of Vol. 2 should be familiar with this character, who played a big role in the first major story arc, particularly in Chapter 7. She’s one of the very few OC’s created by other people who’ve been grandfathered into Vol. 2 (and the remaster of Vol. 1), thanks to me still being in touch with her creator, Jessica Davis. And she is a massively important character to Eon’s World, so I was eager to get her introduced early in the remaster. As originally conceived, Cookirini was an old friend of Eon’s, and that became very important later on. But I never really showed them interacting early on, at least not in a way that would suggest a strong friendship. But then I had a moment of inspiration.

I’d also never established how Eon learned to swordfight. It was just a skill he had, without any explanation. In the fanfic where Eon first debuted, I hand-waved it by saying he was self-taught, but that’s not very plausible, is it? But then I had an idea. What if Cookirini taught him? After all, she can swing a sword, too, she’s a few years older than Eon (Eon’s 16, she’s in her early-to-mid 20’s at this point), and it explains how they came to be friends.

A lot of what this chapter is about is introducing the main OC’s in Eon’s World, so it’s a little domestic to start with, I fully admit. But if jeopardy and peril are more your speed, be sure to come back tomorrow.

Hi there! I was reading "Eon's World 2.0", and I loved it. Besides the plot itself and the enthralling battles, something that caught my attention is the way you addressed the topic of Politics:

On the one hand, you didn't do it stereotyped, as the Yankees do in TV and their movies; even when the Politics wasn't something central on the plot, you showed it's something important and it doesn't necessarily have to be only bureaucracy and incompetence. On the other hand, you addressed an issue that hasn't yet been addressed by any sci-fi work I've known: the desire for independence that human colonies could have in case Humanity spreads to other planets.

I recall that in the preview of a page of "Eon's World 2.0", you mentioned the difficulty when creating a cast with diversity. I have a similar problem, but it has nothing to do with the introduction of diversity itself: I'm planning to write a crossover of my Sonic fanfics with other things, and I dunno how to portray intersex characters, mainly because I've never met any intersex person. Here's a journal where I meditated on the subject:
Philosophical doubt: How to portray intersexs?I have plans to write a series of stories, about which I can only advance two things: the first one is that it'll be a huge crossover between my Sonic fanfics and other things, and the second one is (as the title suggests) that it'll have at least one intersex character.
And I don't have the slightest idea how to portray them properly, without it being offensive to a reader who is an intersex person and casually finds my fanfics while wandering the Internet.
It is necessary to draw attention to the fact that there is a great variety of people who have physical characteristics very different from each other but who are included in the category of "intersex" without paying attention to those differences as evident as the differences between women and men. Therefore, it'd not be a good idea to put a single character representing them all. Doing such a thing would be really unfair, just like making all women be represented by a single female character in the middle of an almost entirely ma

Anyway... I will patiently wait for the next pages of your comic.

Hey, thanks for your nice comments. It's really gratifying to hear from a fan of Eon's World, so thank you. I'm glad you've enjoyed the story so far. I hope that continues to be the case.

As to portraying intersex people, I'm afraid I don't know how much help I could be there, as I am not intersex, nor do I know anyone else who is (or at least is open about it). I have a lot of non-binary friends, including one romantic partner, but non-binary and intersex are not necessarily the same thing (although, there is no reason they can't coincide).

I would say that the amount of thought you've already put into this and the fact that you're worried about getting it wrong are all good signs that you're on the right track. You obviously care about doing this well and portraying an intersex character in a sensitive and considerate way. As you've noted in your journal post, tho, there is no one way to be intersex. This is also true of being a trans woman, a trans man, or non-binary, or any other flavour of queer or trans. Everyone's experience is different, and it's never going to be possible to encapsulate every possibility in a single character, or even in several characters.

What I guess I'd recommend is listening to the thoughts and experiences of people who are intersex and use that information to inform you as you create such a character. But don't overthink it. To give an example, when asked one time how he is able to write such strong and compelling women in his series, 'A Song of Ice and Fire', George R.R. Martin replied, "I just write strong and compelling characters who happen to be women." I think much the same could work in your case. Don't make the fact that they're intersex the most important thing about your character; just write a good, interesting character who happens to be intersex. Do that and I'll think you'll have made a good start.

Oh yeah, one last thing. Transgender people hate it when folks call us "transgenders", like it's a noun. I don't speak for intersex people, but I imagine they feel the same about being called "intersexs", so I'd recommend avoiding that. I'm sure you meant no offence, tho.

Anyway, I know that's not much, but I hope it helps. Thanks again for your feedback and thank you for the many, many faves.

Your sprite comic was one of the major inspirations for one of my own previous projects, the Sprite Wars. Sprite comics themselves have fallen out of the vogue, especially long-running ones with lots of story and action. Glad to see that you've decided to reupload them, because it'd be a shame to permanently lose one of the things that influenced me in my own works.

Aww, thank you! I really appreciate you saying so. I have the remastered versions of the first 150 pages on my site, if you want to read them there rather than wait for me to upload them all here. And I hope to get more of that done once I've completed Chapter 8 of the sequel series. :)

I'd like to see that, sure. I read the IDW Transformers comics, mind you, and they have a great track record for bringing back fan favourites from throughout all of Transformers history, so I think we're already in with a good chance of seeing those characters make a return. I'll check out the petition later, tho. Thanks.
