Speed Painting Challenge #6 by Delight046 Speed Painting Challenge #6 by Delight046
Speed Painting Challenge#6: Draw a favorite character or OC. It took me awhile to pick a character to draw considering I have so many favorite characters (my own and from series I absolutely love). I finally chose Sakura Kinomoto from Card Captor Sakura because....shes just so darn adorable and energetic. Plus I havent tried drawing her first opening costume ever since I started liking the series (I love the 3rd opening dress), so I thought it would be good practice to see how many frills, bows, and her cheerful nature in a limited amount of time.

Btw if you haven't figured it out already these speed drawings are my participation in, DamaiMikaz 's speedpainting challenge. If you need to improve your drawing abilities (or try to speed up) you should totally try this! If you're interested in joining the Speed Painting Challenge, go check out DamaiMikaz's Journal here (this challenge is from April 1st to April 30th): Speed painting challenge!

This drawing took....roughly an hour (Hour and 5 min, if you want to be exact). Anywho, I hope you enjoyed it!

Hey, never say never! It takes a lot of practice, but it's totally worth it. Really.

I've actually been a "fast" drawer for awhile, because one of my college professors (my freshman year) forced my class to draw sketches (gesture) in 10-30 seconds. We did that "exercise" for about five minutes, and then worked on a gesture sketch for a min, then five min....then 10 min. etc etc. Basically, it's just teaching you to just draw as fast as you can by relying on your current choices/decisions of lines (or in this case color), and then ask questions/change mind later.....if you have time. :)

Although, most of the time when I work on a digital picture, it may take me anywhere from 3 to 5 hours (on up) depending on detail or using a reference. 9_9;;; I really should log how long my drawings/paintings take....

hehe ^^  I'm just learning to draw on the computer right now so it takes me forever to do anything and I still don't know all the tools XD  (and I'm using Firealpaca plus an ancient Photoshop! LOL)
I'm practicing though and I really hope to become faster ^^ I'm just drawing chibis right now but it takes so much time O.O (but I'm faster when it's just normal pen and paper, it's drawing with a mouse what kills me! o@)

Ahhh that would make sense. Have you thought about buying a wacom or intuos tablet? That would probably make your drawing time be much faster. :) But if you dont have the money (cheaper tablets run about $60-$100), then....keep practicing and save up. (google keyboard shortcuts for Firealpaca which may also make drawing/editing go faster). :)

Also, I thought I heard somewhere that you can legally download Photoshop CS1 to 3 now.... so you dont have to use significantly old software (maybe? I need to look into this to be certain). XD I bought CS4 back in college, so thats what I use software wise (my tablet is an intuos 3 which is about...*counts on fingers* 6 years old). ^^;;

yep, $ is a problem *sigh*
I do have a super cheap tablet (around $80-90) but it's really basic so it can't have full programs or anything (and the screen sensitivity is not good to draw, I tried with really basic drawing apps but... nope, lines go wherever they want! XD)

ah, yes! I heard now it's free *--* I'll have to check compatibility with my computer though (6 years old too! :P), the ram already makes my old PS to freeze sometimes, when the file is too heavy, so I'll have to get a version that doesn't use much ram u.u do you recommend me to get a newer version? or maybe Gimp? do they make the work a bit easier for the mouse user? ^.^U
anyway, Firealpaca is really friendly for the first stages of the drawing (lineart with the mouse and base colors) so I'm happy using it right now :)

Yeaaaaah, I know that problem well. :/

Hmmm, did you install drivers for your tablet on the computer (that should enable touch sensitivity/not have lines bouncing around)? Or check for software updates from the manufacturer? Other than that....you may need to

I actually do not dabble much in "free" software. I do know that Paint tool SAI is AMAZING (cuz i've tried), but to purchase a license key is $50 (unless you can find a pirated copy that does not have spyware on it). Sooo thats waaaaay cheaper than Photoshop that tends to be in the $200-$600 range. :/

hmmmm, my tablet is really cheap and basic so it doesn't have all those options T-T but I better wait until I really need something more advanced ^^
oh, I was talking about the free legal PS  :P I doubt the newest PS works fine on my computer if my super old PS sometimes freezes ^^U
I heard SAI is great and I wonder what makes it so special :P it seems that a lot of people here is using it!

thanks for your advices! I'm new to making digital drawings so every tip helps Hug

*cough* All tablets -should- have touch sensitivity as long as you've installed the drivers that came with the tablet (or if you bought it second hand, you should be able to download them....somewhere....). What kind of tablet do you have?

Sai is amazing! Theres some tools on that that are even better than photoshops IMO, plus it's ALOT cheaper if you do decide to purchase it. Another option would be the purchase it with an artsy friend, and you can both share a full version keycode (it allows you to re-install it x amount of times, in the event that a computer fails, etc). :) Here are two drawings I made with Sai: I was a big fan of the "watercolor tool"

Yup! No problem! If you ever have any art related questions, just ask! I'll try to answer them the best I can.... XD

Yay! Often the characters I draw are reserved, peaceful, or laidback...so it was good practice to draw Sakura being Genki...er....energetic! :D

I may draw her costumes in the future, but as occasional side projects. A while back someone suggested I draw Mamoru and Usagi dressed up as Syaoran and Sakura (like the doodle I drew for last years Halloween) which I do want to draw....but....as always..... life loves to get in the way. XD

Btw Ninja kitty is back inside. A couple days after I found little "half-stache" dead, I noticed that ninja kitty was acting weird (walking funny etc)....and suspect that she also had been attacked by a dog (Probably my neighbors dog, cuz their dog was loose recently). Ninja Kitty has a few tender spots on her side/stomach, a sore leg (or two), and a couple of smaller puncture wounds on her head. She's eating, and sleeping a lot.....but healing slowly. :/ Not to mention she's going through her "de-hair" ing time of the year. Ugh...so much hair....

Well, if you keep a note of the link, the gallery can prove of some good use later ( sailormoo.net/anime/sakura.htm… ), as well as MiniTokyo ( www.minitokyo.net/Sakura+Kinom… ), too.  Check them out to see what I mean.  (thumbs-up).

And condolences to Ninja Kitty, I hope she's feeling better soon.  (And the word you're looking for, for Ninja Kitty's "de-hair"-ing time of the year., is 'moulting', or 'shedding').
