Aroma from Kimoku Garden by Delight046 Aroma from Kimoku Garden by Delight046
done with 94%watercolor, 4%colored pencils, and 2%acrylic

Annnnnnd the starlights picture is done! Yaaay! It turned out a little too symmetrical.....which was almost spot on balanced which can be suuuuuper boring (at least for me), but it has some aspects that are visually interesting. The "castles" for the starlights were added after I started coloring the picture. Since they are from a different galaxy, solar system, etc, I thought I'd go with a different type of castle....flowers! I did a little bit of research as to Seiya, Taiki, and Yatens supposed birth flowers...which coincidentally turned out to be butterfly attracting flowers. Soooooo, I basically created a garden without having to get my hands dirty *insert joke about watercolors being colored mud here*.

Taiki's flower/castle: Lilly of the Valley
Yaten's flower/castle: Violet
Seiya's flower/castle: Larkspur

I was actually kinda surprised that Yaten's and Taiki's flowers are the way that they are (Yaten has the green dress, but gets a purple flower, and Taiki gets a white/green flower while having a purple dress). Oh well, I made it work in my own derpy universe of creativeness.

The red butterflies and Osmanthus blossoms are to reference the starlights search for Princess Kakyuu. She's close by, but still out of reach (and all that jazz). Oddly enough, Osmanthus blossoms (Kakyuu's flower) dont attract many insects or butterflies.....supposedly.  The things you learn when you research stuff. Heres my Kakyuu picture if you haven't seen it already.

Gorgeous!!!

Osmanthus has this very... peculiar fragrance to it. It's not sweet-smelling, but it's not exactly repulsive. That could be why insects avoid them, but heck, what do I know? :P (Wiki link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osmanthu…)

Btw, I'm a sucker for symbolism, so the whole "birth flowers" thing really appeals to me. Where did you get such information? :D

Anyways, this is gorgeous!

Next on the docket is.....Princess form of Galactica, and other super secret project (spoiler: it's romance themed!). I'm still trying to fill all the pages in my first watercolor sketchbook before working on newer projects. Originally I was going to have Galactica in the new sketchbook, but one project wasnt going so well, so I erased it and changed it to Galactica. XD Galactica is the 2nd to last drawing that needs to be colored in the old sketchbook, and the last drawing is a commission that got put on hold by the commissioner. :<

The super secret picture is in the new sketchbook. :)

It depends on whats going on. Tomorrow I have a family gathering cuz my aunt from south carolina is in the area, so I may not be able to work on the pictures at all tomorrow (or maybe in the evening if it's a short gathering).

Ahaha, well at least someone likes the symmetry. :) As for the colors...how do they get to you? o_o?

Derpy trivia about this picture: before I started this picture, I had a bit of red on the picture (from another drawing). So to cover it up, I put in butterflies. The largest butterfly on Yaten's dress, is where the red paint/pigment originally was. OH WAYS OF FIXING THIS AND IT MAKES PRETTEH CREATIONS! :D

Although I probably should have put in more yellow. So theres more of a rainbow feel.....

I always love when you use such bright colors on dark backgrounds, as you've done with many of the Sailor Moon pieces. How do you do it? Or where do you start? For this painting, did you paint the three then do the background? Or did you mask the three and do the background first?

I asked more questions than I answered... o.O

Actually you did answer my question, so no worries!

Wow, thats actually a pretty complex question, but I'll do my best to answer it....the shortway.

How I do my Sailor Moon pictues is with watercolors. Watercolors are transparent paint thats diluded with water, and requires a buildup of multiple layers to achieve a desired effect or get darker colors. Since watercolors are transparent (some colors are opaque), and use the white of the paper to be seen....you have to work from light to dark, big to little, general to detail (etc). The problem with watercolor is once you get too dark, you can't go back (hence the slowly layer method, or using acrylic/colored pencils for mistakes).

For this picture in particular I first drew out the characters, and colored most of them before starting the background (I had to look at my instagram to see if I took a picture of it in progress): instagram.com/p/xYjaSKSjE-/?mo…

Then I painted Liquid Latex (Frisket, which you can buy at walmart or any artstore) for the stars. After it dries, it retains the white of the paper for the stars as I'm painting the dark background (which can be anywhere from 3-5 layers depending how picky I am). Once I'm done with the background, I can rub off the frisket and have white stars dotting my skies (and if I need more stars I use white acrylic paint to paint in some more). Heres a pic from my instagram of me putting down frisket: instagram.com/p/s87k67yjLo/?mo…

Does that help?

One of these days I really need to do a tutorial of basic watercolor techniques. It's fun....once you get the hang of it. ^^;;;

And you answered my questions, as well!

So watercolors really take a lot of patience! I guess I'm not patient enough to put more layers, for fear of messing up. But that's part of the process!

Ah, you explained about Frisket on another comment to mine, but now I can see what you mean!

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions! They really helped me understand what I can do for next time I paint!

Yes watercolor requires an insane amount of patience, but its learned overtime. I guess whats really required is that you need to plan ahead with whatever project you do. It has some room for spontaneous painting, but you still need to know what youre doing or you'll end up with something you dont like, or the adventure of fixing the flop to make it presentable. ^_^;;;

But dont let that scare you! Try some practice pieces just getting used to water colors before attempting monstrosities with lots of details. Such as a simple landscape, a cup and saucer, an apple, etc...and then start with characters. :3
