I have quite a group of mentally ill ocs, my two main ones being one with depression and diagnosed clinically insane and the other suffering from masochism which causes him to cut his own face a lot both due to some sort of abuse. I spent a lotta time researching each individual subjects (though I didn’t have to look far for depression, I just need to glance at myself) I think its ok to have ocs who do that sorta stuff as long as it isn’t their whole character and you research it I say go ahead, do whatever.
I don't care if people think it's okay cause it's "natural"
Every drug is natural, even antibiotics are natural cause they're made from funguses and natural properties!
I hate how people think its okay and I want to move where its illegal.
my sona(s) have mental disorders, but they are all based on my own and are true to how they affect me in life
please don't do it to be cool or to "create diversity" unless it actually contributes to their story oml
It's such a common thing to do I now think that having dead parents as a backstory is more original omh.
I don't even let my sonas have disorders, even though I suffer from many things that cripple me. I just don't want to make it seem like i'm doing it to be cutting edge.
I do have characters with disorders but they are super developed and its there to be a plot POINT not the thing driving the plot.
I totally agree!! the only reason my main has disorders was for a way for me to vent when I needed
but then i like never post those because it's personal and tbh it's way too popular to "vent"
and on top of that, as I get better at dealing with things, so do my sonas
because they're supposed to reflect me as i am now, not how i was at me worst
and outright basing a character off of a disorder is super super wrong!!
no character should be the actual "embodiment" of a disorder
it's super unoriginal at this point, and it's impossible to get right because everyone who has the disorder
presents it differently!!
thank you for pointing this all out oml
I especially ESPECIALLY hate people who make designs based on disorders like oMF
I remember I had to draw a commission of a character with cuts as part as it design, and tbh since than I refuse to draw characters like that because it makes me uncomfortable that someone would want that as a design add-on?
ANother thing with all this disorder bs.
Is most of these people that make the character have depression/bipolar/anxiety are S E L F D I A G N O S E R S
I cannot eXPLAIN how much anger these people bring me
Theres a DIFFERENCE between being depressed and having depression
theres a DIFFERENCE between moodswings and bipolar disorder
and theres also a difference between feeling uneasy and having anxiety.
NONE of these disorders can be self diagnosed!
and it angers me that no one understands this! BEacause of all these people the ones who actually suffer from this stuff get treated lower than dirt cause apparently everyone today is depressed
sorry for the random rant just sdfsg
i completely agree with everything you are saying
people who have self-harmed (usually) DON'T WANT CHARACTERS WITH CUTS
i have no problem with scars, self-harm i'm touchy on because obviously the whole "edgy trend"
SELF DIAGNOSED PEOPLE ARE THE W O R S T
like, hun I wish I didn't have anxiety or depression or any of these things
just because someone is sad doesn't mean they automatically have depression
if someone is stressed out and worried about something doesn't mean they automatically have anxiety
one of my friends introduced me to "Stalking, Killing" which is a horror thriller manga, and I kinda liked it
but then they made one of the MAIN characters have borderline to explain his psychotic actions
and i just,,
NOOO NO NON O
YOU DON'T DO THAT
you are a cool person, by the way
Tbh I think it's gross to use mental disorders to explain why a character is edgy, since not everyone with those disorders is edgy.
There's some exceptions like you can make a character with anxiety, anxious, and always on edge.
But if you make a character with depression constantly edgy just because you need that 'serious character' in your plot than just don't do it??
I have alot of serious and edgy characters but I don't use mental illness as a cheap tactic for why they're that way.
Being someone who suffers from these illnesses people are always using to make their character seem cutting edge, I think it's cliche and unoriginal since I see it EVERYWHERE in the art community.
If you have to make a edgy character i'd prefer if they'd have a very deep plot (that does NOT involve dead parents or something, that's another trait that's very hard to do right.)
Like I have a character that left home due to trauma with his family, his parents and family are still alive and intact he just took a event really rough.
Now while he's edgy, he can also be happy and a jokester. Not letting his rough past effect him as a character.
Making a character thats only edgy/happy/etc. or just there to be comic relief Makes the character seem super one dimensional and flat.
i share similar views on this idea, its kinda irritating, most of my edgy characters usually have a better reason than mental illness except for like 2 of them where their illness actually effects them
