The Lady Jessica by DeepChrome The Lady Jessica by DeepChrome
This was done for a RelicNews Forums "Redesign Dune" thread. Been a while since I did a full-blown digital painting that I've been reasonably happy with. I'd been compelled to do a decent fanart of Jessica as she isn't shown much on DA.

The black is to homage her Bene Gesserit training, with the gold bits and jewelry to indicate her status as the Duke Leto Atreides' concubine.

I was originally aiming for a mix of Alice Krige and Cate Blanchett but forgot to use any kind of reference photo for her face, and just went with the book's description of her being lean, with a regal, oval face, green eyes, and copper hair. She wound up with a touch of Gates McFadden (Beverly Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation) and some stuff I can't quite pin down, instead. Ohwell, she still looks like Jessica.

Might try doing some of the other characters later. Enjoy.

Photoshop CS2 with a Wacom Intuos3. Digi-painted for a few hours a day over the space of 3 days. Oh and the Selective Color dialogue box can be such a lifesaver sometimes.

Dune and all characters are copyright Frank Herbert.

Thank you!

I have one of Princess Irulan from the same book series that's in progress now. (If you've seen the Lynch version of Dune, she's the narrator who turns up in the beginning. Always thought that actress nailed the role.) Going to take a few days, but it should look pretty sweet as I had to design a more outlandish dress for her. I always felt Jessica was the more minimalistic, "classy" dresser as she didn't have anywhere nearly insane in terms of a budget for clothes. :D

Jessica? As in Jessica Rabbit from Roger Rabbit?

Ah oh I see about that. Even though she's got the face of her in Roger Rabbit even though I've never heard of those novels that you read a lot.

She does have a bit of that look, yes.

That reminds me to try and do a good Jessica Rabbit picture sometime. Thanks for the idea. ;)

Jessica is a charactor from a book series called Dune by Frank Herbert (1965). The novels have since gone on to be produced into a movie (1984) and television mini-series (2000).

You can find more on wikipedia...

Info aside, this isn't a bad effort at all. If I could just get my hand at proportions right I might be able to start doing stuff like this more often. Good effort :)

Actually, it's copyright the Herbert Estate, CD, since Frank himself isn't around any more.

Copyright nit-picks aside, this is a truly wonderful piece. I like how it turned out.

Yeah, I'll go edit that. Thanks. :D

And thank you! It turned out better than I thought it would.

Someday, I'll try maybe Irulan, Chani, or Alia. Maybe tomorrow since I'll have a load of time to kill with a stuffy nose that's finally getting under anti-histamine control.
